🏗️ RCC Column Casting Process – Step-by-Step Guide
An RCC column is a critical structural member that transfers loads from beams and slabs safely to the foundation. Proper ex*****on at every stage is essential for strength, durability, and structural safety.
1️⃣ Setting Out & Marking
Mark the column centerline as per structural drawings.
Set out the column position accurately on site.
Check dimensions, alignment, and right angles.
Use a string line, level, and suitable measuring tools.
Accurate setting out ensures the column is constructed in the correct location.
2️⃣ Reinforcement Work
Fix the main vertical reinforcement according to the structural drawing.
Provide ties/stirrups at the specified spacing.
Maintain the required concrete cover using cover blocks.
Ensure reinforcement is straight, properly lapped, tied, and adequately anchored.
Starter bars should be correctly connected with the footing reinforcement.
3️⃣ Formwork / Shuttering
Use rigid and leak-proof plywood or suitable shuttering panels.
Align and plumb the formwork properly.
Provide adequate supports, walers, clamps, and bracing.
Check internal column dimensions before pouring.
Apply release agent to the inner shuttering surface.
4️⃣ Concrete Pouring
Use the concrete grade specified by the structural design.
Pour concrete continuously in suitable layers.
Avoid excessive free-fall and segregation.
Ensure concrete flows properly around reinforcement.
M20/M25 or another grade may be specified depending on the structural design.
5️⃣ Compaction
Use an internal vi****or to compact the fresh concrete.
Insert the vi****or at regular intervals, typically around 300–450 mm, depending on site conditions and equipment.
Compact each layer adequately to remove trapped air.
Avoid over-vibration, which can cause segregation.
Proper compaction helps prevent honeycombing and voids.
6️⃣ Finishing
Finish the top surface smoothly and maintain the required level.
Check column alignment and dimensions.
Remove excess concrete.
Ensure adequate concrete cover at the top and around reinforcement.
Clean and inspect the formwork for future reuse.
7️⃣ Curing
Begin curing after the concrete has sufficiently set, commonly around 12–24 hours, depending on conditions.
Keep the concrete continuously moist.
Use wet hessian cloth, water curing, or an appropriate curing compound.
The infographic indicates a minimum curing period of 7 days; the required curing regime should follow the project specifications and applicable standards.
Do not remove formwork prematurely.
📐 Typical RCC Column Values
Typical column size: 230 × 230 mm to 600 × 600 mm
Example main bars: 8–16 mm diameter bars
Tie diameter: 6–12 mm
Typical tie spacing: 100–150 mm c/c
Example clear cover: 40 mm
Concrete grade: M20 / M25 or as specified by structural design
⚠️ Important: Column reinforcement, dimensions, concrete grade, cover, lap length, tie spacing, and formwork details must always be followed from the approved structural drawings and project specifications. Typical values should not be used as a substitute for structural design.
✅ Important Site Checks

✔ Proper verticality/plumb
✔ Reinforcement as per drawing
✔ Correct concrete cover
✔ Leak-proof and properly supported shuttering
✔ Correct concrete grade
✔ Proper compaction
✔ No honeycombing
✔ Correct top level and alignment
✔ Adequate curing
Build accurately. Cast carefully. Cure properly. A well-executed RCC column is the backbone of a safe and durable structure.
