"It’s 'Criminal' to Tell Voters They Will Be Denied Development for Electing Independents Candidates" – Gary Nkombo

Former Local Government and Rural Development Minister Gary Nkombo has described as "criminal" the practice of telling voters that they will be denied development if they elect independent or opposition Members of Parliament.

Nkombo said development is a constitutional right for all Zambians and should never be used as a political tool to influence how people vote.

His remarks come against the backdrop of repeated statements by President Hakainde Hichilema, who has urged voters in several constituencies to elect UPND parliamentary candidates, arguing that independent or opposition MPs would not effectively work with the government to deliver development.

However, Nkombo maintained that threatening communities with the withdrawal of development projects based on their electoral choices is wrong and contrary to democratic principles.

He said every constituency deserves equal access to development regardless of the political affiliation of its elected leaders.

Nkombo emphasized that government resources belong to all citizens and should not be distributed on the basis of partisan politics.
