The first kick-off meeting of the WASIMM Project was held on 15th January 2025 at the Department of Physics, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus . The project, coordinated by CyRIC , brings together partners bialoom and the University of Cyprus to address critical challenges in water safety and public health.
The WASIMM project focuses on developing innovative technologies such as Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy and machine learning (ML) to detect harmful pathogens, including coliform bacteria and viruses, in wastewater. These methodologies aim to:

▪️Enable rapid and accurate detection of contaminants.
▪️Protect public health by preventing outbreaks.
▪️Ensure compliance with strict EU water safety regulations.

This initiative will advance water quality monitoring, offering efficient solutions for real-time detection of pathogens, even at low concentrations, ensuring safer water for communities. The project is co-funded by the EU within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme“THALIA 2021-2027” under the BRIDGE2HORIZON call.

🎉 Highlights from the 12M Consortium Meeting!

On November 27-28, the 12M Consortium Meeting took place in Vienna, Austria, hosted by our valued partner, Vienna University of Technology.

This two-day meeting brought together all consortium members to:

✅ Review the project’s progress over the past 12 months.

✅ Share updates on Work Packages.

✅ Address technical challenges and solutions.

✅ Set clear action plans for the next six months.

The first day concluded with an insightful lab tour at the TU Wien facilities, including the Chemical Analysis and Vibrational Spectroscopy lab (CAVS Research Group).

On the second day, workshops provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions on specific developments, fostering collaboration and innovative solutions.

We have been working silently, we stayed focused! Now it is time to release results that validate our technology. Detection of bacteria and inflammation proteins on the same chip within minutes!
We are happy to share that our team members Thanasis Manolis and Giwrgos Tsekenis will be attending the upcoming World Congress on Biosensors, in Busan, Korea with 2 accepted papers for presentation.
This work would not be possible without the passion and hard work in the lab of our colleagues Christia Eleftheriou and Mahmoud Elrabiaay!!
Kudos to our co-authors and collaborators Antonio Varriale, Alessandro Capo (ISA-CNR, Institute of Food Science) Stephan Suckow, Bartos Chmielak, (AMO GmbH) and Guido Spinola Durante, Martina Renggli, Siegfried Graf (CSEM),

Photonics is a cutting-edge technology that has the potential to save millions of lives. Several startups are already using photonics to develop new medical treatments and diagnostic tools. This could be a game-changer for healthcare, as it would allow doctors to more quickly and easily identify potentially life-threatening conditions.

Science is critical to our understanding of the world around us and how it works. It helps us find cures for diseases, develop new technologies, and protect our environment. That's why it's so important that we have the means to do science. bialoom one of our resident startups is offered such means here at our Gravity Ventures Incubator and we couldn't be more thrilled to be part of their journey to discover new diagnostics tools for the medical industry, through the photonics field.
