📄 New Scientifc Paper: Reflectance-based radiometric adjustment for aerial imagery

Consistent radiometric quality is essential for extracting reliable information from aerial imagery, especially when comparing data captured under different illumination conditions, on different dates, or with different sensors.

In a paper published in the ISPRS Archives and presented at ISPRS Geospatial Week 2026 in Toronto, experts from Vexcel Imaging investigate how reflectance measurements can improve the radiometric adjustment of aerial imagery and create more consistent, physically meaningful image products.

Focusing on UltraCam data, the authors present a workflow that combines ground truth measurements, camera spectral sensitivity, and sun angle information to convert imagery into reflectance units and stabilize radiometric processing.

Key findings include:

✅ Improved consistency across acquisition dates, illumination conditions, and sensors
✅ Better comparability of derived products such as NDVI
✅ Closer agreement with expected literature values and Sentinel-based reference products
✅ A reflectance estimation model that enables large-scale production workflows even without direct ground measurements

The results demonstrate how reflectance-based radiometric adjustment can improve the reliability and comparability of aerial imagery, supporting more accurate analysis for vegetation monitoring and other geospatial applications.

🚀 New Scientific Paper: Evaluating integrated airborne mapping with the UltraCam Dragon

Accurate georeferencing is fundamental to airborne mapping, enabling the reliable production of imagery and LiDAR data for mapping, infrastructure planning, and geospatial analysis.

In a scientifc paper published in the ISPRS Archives and presented at ISPRS Geospatial Week 2026 in Toronto, experts from Vexcel Imaging and Trimble Applanix present and evaluate the UltraCam Dragon, a fully integrated airborne mapping system that combines LiDAR, large-format imagery, GNSS, and IMU technologies in a single workflow.

Using datasets collected in Austria and the United States, the study compares two trajectory processing approaches and assesses their impact on imagery and LiDAR georeferencing accuracy.

✅ Reliable trajectory processing
✅ Consistent georeferencing accuracy for imagery and LiDAR
✅ Strong performance across diverse mapping projects

The results highlight the benefits of tightly integrated sensor systems for high-precision airborne mapping and demonstrate how seamless integration between imaging, LiDAR, and positioning technologies supports efficient geospatial data production.

📸 World Photography Day

Austria's Grüner See is famous for its emerald-green waters. From the ground, it's a beautiful lake.

From above, though, it looks surprisingly familiar... Once you see the squirrel, you can't unsee it. 🐿️

Here's to the photographers, pilots, and image specialists who help us discover new perspectives every day.

🎯 Clean orthomosaics start with intelligent seamlines.

UltraMap automatically generates seamlines using DSM-DTM differences to detect elevated objects, guiding them along roads while avoiding buildings and other structures. The result is cleaner orthomosaics with less manual editing.

Need more control? You can visualize seamlines for quality control, relocate them in selected areas, switch to different source images, and preview your edits in real time before finalizing the orthomosaic.

🎥 Watch our YouTube video to see how a building block can be retextured with alternative source imagery and how seamline edits appear instantly before the final orthomosaic is updated.

Radiometric inconsistencies such as gradients, uneven water balancing, and variability in oblique imagery remain key challenges in aerial mapping workflows.

In last week's Tech Talk Webinar, Bernhard Schachinger explained how the redesigned color balancing approach in UltraMap improves project-wide consistency with a new holistic, model-based workflow — delivering more robust results and processing speeds up to 2x faster.

✅ reduced gradients
✅ improved balancing of water bodies
✅ better consistency in oblique imagery

✈️ Marc Muick also shows how flight planning and acquisition decisions directly affect radiometric consistency and final orthomosaic quality.

🛠️ Plus: Initial Tone Mapping, source image access in the ortho image viewer, and the new L0Extract tool for early-stage QC.
