How many repetitions does it take to become competent?

5? 10? 25? 50?

The answer probably isn't the same for every surgeon, or every procedure.

But there's a bigger question:

Are surgeons actually getting enough opportunities to practice?

Cadaver labs, courses and clinical experience all play an important role in surgical education. But access to hands-on training isn't unlimited.

What if a surgeon could practice the same procedure, or the same challenging anatomy, again and again before encountering it clinically?

That's one of the problems we're working to solve at Fusetec.

More access. More repetition. More opportunities to build competency.

There has been one question throughout the Fusetec journey:


How do we train a surgeon to competency?

Lord Kelvin once said:

“When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it.”

When anatomy, pathology and complexity can change from one training experience to the next with traditional methods...

It becomes difficult to know whether we’re progressing.

At the Center for Medical Innovation CMI - Center for Medical Innovation at the University of Utah, they have capacity to train on cadavers...

AND...

they have also added Fusetec to expand what their training facility can offer.

Specific anatomy.
Specific pathology.
Defined learning outcomes.
And the ability to repeat the same training experience.

That repeatability creates a more consistent basis for practice, feedback and measuring progression.

It also expands the capability and capacity of what a training centre can deliver.

Exposure matters.

But is exposure to random anatomy with traditional methods alone, often without pathology, giving the clearest pathway to competency?

The measure of a surgical training course?

A clearer pathway to competency.

Complexity is not the problem.
Trying to teach it is.

Traditional methods cannot reliably provide a chosen complex anatomy, let alone reproduce that same anatomy across every station.

Now we can.

So we break it down.
Build it stepwise.

Prof Samuel Leong explains the philosophy behind the Building Blocks Concept of Frontal Sinus Surgery.

Delegates learn to understand the anatomy.

Plan the procedure.

Then work through the dissection sequentially, one step at a time.

And when every delegate works through the same complex anatomy, teaching and feedback can be anchored to a common benchmark.

So that we can create a more consistent learning experience.

This is what becomes possible when complex anatomy can be replicated across every station in the surgical training lab.


And it leaves us with one question…

If we now have another way to strengthen the pathway to competency, why is there still resistance to bringing this capability into surgical training labs?
