Throwback to the good old days

The year is 2010, the premium feed in tarrif is ripe for the picking 54 cents, more than double the consumption rate at the time 👊

16 super efficient 190watt sun tech (pre first liquidation 🤣) solar panels are installed on your roof all facing north on a sub-frame aluminium strut Racking system with 2000 pentastar stainless hex fixings 😢😢

You have 4 parralel strings with a fuse combiner box directly exposed to the weather

Dc cable clipped like it’s AC
No segregation in the enclosure at the inverter ac and dc living together in harmony 🤞

Yet 16 years later it still works and the inverter goes for scrap before it fails , panels on the way to North Africa for micro-grid use

Back when men were men, cars were petrol and stuff was built to last 😢😢🫡

If you have been in the game aslong as me and had the pleasure of going full circle on stuff like this (original install and replacement 16 years later, here’s a cheers to you 🍻🍻👊)

Today’s fault finding

Less is more for this job 🪦🪦

26x existing 250 watt panels configured as 13s 2p

Current output recorded as around 1.1 amps peak and output around 1200 watts for 6.5kw array that’s atrocious 😢

Customer stated the neighbours cut down a large tree that was shading the panels for about 10 years

This was the clue I needed !!

Hard shading kills bypass diodes ! Which was obvious on this job once testing started !!

We pulled off the lower row totally to avoid shading from another smaller tree
Re-installed to upper row above existing middle row
Tested every single panel

The results!!

Not good

6x panels totally dead not passing current
Around 10 panels at approx 25-30 volts
Around another 10 panels at approx 18-25 volts

All panels were making around the same 1.8 amps IMP on our cheapie solar panel tester

So the outcome
All the panels have degraded from the factory 33v vmp rating
Most have dead diodes of some sort

20 panels now re- installed
Earths repaired
Dc isolator repaired

System running at approx 2.2 kw on that string in the late afternoon

So not great but a 100% improvement with 6 less panels

We also installed a fresh 9kw array to the east to supplement the charging of this system 👍👍❤️

Conductive copper pipes travelling from body of earth to structure

The importance of consitancy of testing can’t be forgotten !!

Just because Ir tests pass and the RCBO holds in doesn’t mean the installation is safe

This one didn’t pass IR either element is about to leave the chat 😇🪦

Remedial works all over this job are required
Here’s one of about 15 faults found today on this sapn alteration

Called up for a “ faulty inverter “

Ended up being “ faulty installers “

Neutral switched through the isolator which isn’t correct
- but the sweetener being the high resistance terminal on that side of the NHP isolator
2 ohms across the contacts 😢

These isolator’s hate dust , they are supplied with dust caps for this reason and most installers know to not drill through an installed isolator 🤦‍♂️

Issues on installation day causing issues years later

Replaced the isolator mechanism
Bootlace crimped the flex cable strands
Connected the neutrals on the neutral bar in the isolator

Problem solved !!
