Want to help shape long-term benefits for the region?

We're inviting East Gippslanders to put their hand up for a series of Community Benefit Sharing Workshops throughout July.

Building on our consultation with community to date, these workshops are an opportunity to get specific about the priorities, opportunities and ideas that matter most to you, and the role GCM can play.

The first round of in-person workshops will be held at the Quest in Bairnsdale and will cover:

· Local Infrastructure and legacy assets
· Community vibrancy and liveability
· Employment, procurement & workforce development

If you can't attend in person, an overview workshop will be held on Thursday 30 July.

To attend a workshop, RSVP by filling out this form on our website:

From Wednesday 3 June to Thursday 4 June, zoologists from GHD will be undertaking ecology surveys within the Fingerboards Project area.

The work includes nighttime owl surveys using call playback, as well as the collection of audio recording devices that were placed in January as part of frog surveys.

These surveys form part of the ecology studies that have been underway for the past year and are helping build an understanding of local flora, fauna and habitat values across the project area.

Nearby residents may notice two zoologists in high-visibility clothing conducting fieldwork on GCM land, including during evening hours.

Day 46 at the Demonstration Pit.

Now six weeks into operations, the Demonstration Pit has reached the upper mineral sands layer, marking another important milestone in the trial.

Our environmental controls continue to perform as intended, with air quality and noise monitoring recording no dust or noise exceedance to date.

Our Community Reference Group, technical specialists and government stakeholders have visited the site, and we look forward to welcoming our first group of community members onsite in the coming weeks.

If you haven't yet registered for a guided tour of the Demonstration Pit, expressions of interest are still open at: https://www.gippslandcriticalminerals.com/mrdp-guided-tours/

📍Soils investigation underway this week

From Tuesday 26 May to Friday 29 May, soil specialists from SLR Consulting will be carrying out a soil investigation program on GCM-owned land in and around the Fingerboards Project area.

The work will involve collecting and analysing soil samples to build a detailed understanding of existing soil conditions across the project area.

This information will help assess how soils can be protected, managed, and progressively rehabilitated throughout the life of the project, and forms part of the impact assessment work being undertaken for the Environment Effects Statement (EES).

If you have any questions, please contact us on 1800 791 396 or via [email protected].

Want to know more about the Mining and Rehabilitation Demonstration Pit (MRDP)?

We’ve put together a short video that walks through each stage of the mining and rehabilitation process, from topsoil and subsoil removal through to extraction, separation, backfilling and replanting.

The demonstration pit is a condition of our retention licence, and a clear ask from the community for large scale rehabilitation trials.

Come and see the onsite team in action – register for a guided tour of the demonstration pit at www.gippslandcriticalminerals.com/mrdp-guided-tours/ or call us on 1800 791 396.

GCM welcomes the Commonwealth's EPBC determination which outlines four key areas of potential impact requiring assessment. The determination is in line with our expectations and each area is already part of the assessment work we are undertaking at a State level as part of the Environment Effects Statement (EES). The determination can be found at epbcpublicportal.environment.gov.au/all-referrals and a statement from GCM is below.

We have been made aware of a small group gathered in protest out the front of Quest Apartments in Bairnsdale today.

GCM staff were not at the hotel and did not have that hotel booked for meetings at that time.

Unfortunately, that means that it was the Quest, their staff and their guests that experienced this protest.

While GCM respects the right of all community members to express their views, we do not support activity that unfairly impacts local businesses and visitors. We regret any inconvenience today’s activity may have caused.

GCM welcomes any genuine opportunity to engage directly with protest organisers, along with the wider community, in a safe and respectful way that includes the following channels:

• In person at our office: 50 Forge Creek Road, Bairnsdale
• Phone: 1800 791 396
• Community Visit: 6 June, 9AM-12PM, Eastwood Shopping Precinct
• Drop-in Session: 17 June, 5-7PM, Lindenow South Recreation Reserve
• Webinar: 17 June, 3-4PM, Online

We also look forward to welcoming the community to our upcoming ‘Ask the Expert’ sessions, where attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with specialists from across the project. More details will be shared soon.

🌤️Real-time weather monitoring is now online.

Check out the latest weather conditions at Fingerboards, including wind speed and direction, temperature, rainfall and more.

The live feed draws from two on-site weather stations: one south-west of the Fingerboards intersection, and a second on the Mitchell River Plateau that was installed in response to community feedback.

You can track trends over the past 3 hours, 24 hours, 5 days or 7 days, giving you a clear picture of what’s happening on site, in your own time.

This same data is a key input into the environmental and technical studies that form part of the Environment Effects Statement (EES).

As part of these ongoing environmental studies, ecology specialists from GHD will be undertaking flora and fauna roadside surveys along a section of the Bairnsdale-Dargo Road reserve south-east of Fingerboards tomorrow (Tuesday 12 May). We ask drivers to please take care and follow all traffic control and reduced speed limits while works are underway.

Explore the live feed on our monitoring and studies page: https://www.gippslandcriticalminerals.com/environment/monitoring-studies/
