Quite often people will come upto me and tell me about the old hand tools that their grandfather had left behind.

They hold onto them with such pride. They know how important they were to him and his ability to provide.

If you want real handcrafted, the type that has imperfections and countless little details that show the workmanship of the real people that made it, there are no shortcuts.

Me personally, I love the look of honest workmanship.

Nothing hidden.

It is, what it is.

People will look at your work in the future and see a snapshot of exactly the craftsman you were upon its completion.

You may even look back at it with a critical eye, not impressed, but it is apart of your journey nonetheless.

It was a pleasure to have join us as the recipient of the apprentice giveaway.

Yakob is currently completing his apprenticeship whilst traveling from Denmark.

Here you can see him cleaning the sidewalls of a mortice pocket with a bisaigue. A large French slick.

One of my favorite parts of these events are the people that come together.

The journey into traditional framing can feel isolated in Australia. The opportunity to spend time creating with like minded aspiring craftsmen keeps the fire burning.

John from Creswick training joined us to hold a visual grading course for myself and 17 other participants.

We covered both hardwood and softwood, with participants traveling from all over the East of Australia.

This qualification allows the participants to now visually stress grade the timber that they mill themselves for use in construction.

Our first post to stone workshop was a great day.

We had a range of incredibly difficult stones to work with and the participants did an amazing job.

Opportunities to learn from blokes that have been in the industry as long as Ian from Lucas Mill don’t come along too often.

These old blokes are as dry as a chip, but if you ask them about timber, they will talk all day.

Bringing together a couple dozen people with varying experience to talk all things timber fills in a day real quick.

Thanks for everyone that came along to our training day, it was so valuable and something I’m very keen to do again.
