Great seeing our recorders in action and bioacoustics playing a valuable role in western ground parrot conservation!
The fight to save the Western Ground Parrot from extinction must rely on multiple tools. ARUs (Automated Recording Units) are one of these tools as they can indicate where parrots are located and their status, thereby allowing scarce resources to be focused in the right places. The Friends were delighted to recently receive the final report from Specialised Zoological (Dr Kyle Armstrong) and (now) PhD student Joseph Jantke on development of a deep learning bioacoustic recognition system to help detect Kyloring calls from the ARU song files. It’s hoped that with further development, the system will help unlock the 80% of ARU recordings which remain unanalysed due to resource and time constraints. It will be very exciting to see what surprises these song files might contain about this extremely rare, cryptic and shy bird! Thanks to donations from members and supporters, the Friends were able to provide the $6,000 funding for the project.
