You might remember the MASON Engineering Drag Bucket we shared previously. 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚, 𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩.

Ryan’s concept was a drag bucket - basically a cross between a scraper bucket and a grader blade.

If you haven’t seen one before, they’re commonly used for road works and site levelling, particularly on farms and properties.
They help shape the road surface, create the proper camber so water runs off, and move material from high spots into low spots.

𝙈𝙮 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙟𝙤𝙗 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙮𝙖𝙣’𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝘾𝘼𝘿 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 - something that could be built consistently while keeping the practicality of what he’d already created.

There’s usually a point where workshops start getting asked about bigger work.
Council jobs.
Commercial builders.
Larger operators.
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗔𝗗 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵…

𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗲 is a 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻 and former 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿 contestant. He’s also competed in the 𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗛𝗟 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗦 series, where competitors run what’s known as a “Hot Saw.”

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘄… 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘁.
These are heavily modified, extremely powerful competition chainsaws built purely for cutting events.

Gerald got in touch needing a plate for the side of the saw drawn up in CAD.
The plate will be machined from a solid block of aluminium, and because these saws get pushed pretty hard in competition, parts like this take a fair bit of punishment.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, 𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗳.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻.
With a clear CAD drawing, the part can be machined again anytime and still fit perfectly.
That repeatability is one of the biggest advantages of good CAD work.

No guessing.
No measuring the old one again.
No hoping everything lines up.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗔𝗗 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗷𝗼𝗯 - from full machines and assemblies right down to a single component like a saw plate.
Efficiency often starts in the drawings.

This was a design we helped a client of ours, RYAN MASON Engineering , with.

It’s the full assembly of his larger cotton bale grab.
He had an existing design that worked for the smaller bales. But when bale sizes changed for some growers using those cotton pickers, the bale grab needed to be upsized - it just wasn’t fitting properly anymore.

This one mounts to the back of a tractor via the 3-point linkage.
Its job is simple - collect cotton bales from the paddock and move them back to the storage area.

And when you’re dealing with cotton season, it’s not just a handful. Sometimes there are hundreds lined up together.

Bigger bales mean more weight, different load handling, and tighter design considerations.

Kicking off March with a new blog, and it’s something we see a lot across Central West workshops. 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡-𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙧…. 𝘽𝙪𝙩… 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙥𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨.

👉 And “we’ll sort it out on the floor” starts costing time.

A lot of regional NSW fabrication and manufacturing businesses sit right in that in-between space.
Too established to wing it.
Not big enough to justify a full-time CAD designer.
