A couple of weeks ago, Kristy and Kate traded the workshop for a room full of contractors, project people and plenty of familiar faces at the Connecting Industry Luncheon in Gladstone.

This time, the guest presenters were BMD Group, sharing an update on their work across Central Queensland and some valuable insight into the opportunities flowing through to local industry.

For Mick Mannion Fabrications, these events are a chance to get out from behind the emails and phone calls, hear directly from the companies delivering major projects and keep building relationships across the region.

And for Kristy and Kate, it’s also an opportunity to do two things they’re particularly good at...

Talk to people and have a w**e. 😂🍷

We’re calling that networking.

Another great afternoon keeping MMF connected with what’s happening across Central Queensland

Mick founded Mick Mannion Fabrications back in 1987 and, after more than three decades building the business, these days he’s sort of retired.

We say sort of because while Matt now runs the show, Mick still has an impressive ability to wander across the workshop floor, assess what everyone is doing and freely distribute his opinions on how it could be done better. 😂

Some call it advice.
Some call it experience.
Matt probably calls it something else entirely.

But behind the stirring is a father who built a family business from the ground up, passed on decades of knowledge and gave Matt the opportunity to take what he started and continue building it for the next generation.

And while Mick might spend a little more time fishing and enjoying life these days, his influence is still very much part of MMF.

Happy Father’s Day for Sunday, Mick.

We hope Matt gives you the day off... from supervising him. 😂🍻

What a way to finish the 2026 Queensland Variety Bash! 💙

Last Thursday, Variety Bash Car 352 - SmurfnTurps rolled across the finish line right here in Gladstone, wrapping up an incredible journey with the Bash celebrations and awards night at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre.

And they didn’t come home empty-handed...

🏆 SmurfnTurps took out the Best Team 2026 Award!

After following their adventures, breakdowns, roadside repairs and plenty of laughs along the way, we reckon that’s a pretty fitting way to finish.

But the biggest achievement belongs to everyone involved in this year’s Bash. Together, the Bashers raised an incredible $1,813,781 for Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland, helping support Queensland kids who are sick, disadvantaged or living with disability.

Mick Mannion Fabrications has been incredibly proud to sponsor SmurfnTurps and play a small part in what has been a massive effort.

Congratulations to the entire SmurfnTurps crew on the award and to every Basher, sponsor, supporter and volunteer who helped make this year’s Bash such a success.

Best Team 2026... not bad, Smurfs! 💙🏆

A couple of weeks ago, Kristy and Kate headed along to Powerlink Queensland’s 2026 Central Queensland Transmission Network Forum in Gladstone.

They represented Mick Mannion Fabrications, talked industry, heard about what’s ahead across Central Queensland and did all the right things.

Well... almost all the right things.

You may remember we called them out for somehow attending an entire industry forum without taking a single selfie. Not one. We thought perhaps they were just a little camera shy.

Turns out they weren’t quite as successful at avoiding the camera as they thought.

While Kristy and Kate might have forgotten to document their attendance, Powerlink Queensland didn’t.

Caught in the wild, looking very professional and completely unaware that photographic evidence was being gathered.

Nice try, girls. Looks like we can cancel the social media training after all. Powerlink has you covered! 😂

There’s taking a car for a test drive… and then there’s putting it through the Queensland Variety Bash! 😂🚙

Over the past few days, Variety Bash Car 352 - SmurfnTurps has certainly been earning its stripes. Hundreds of kilometres of dirt roads, corrugations, water crossings, sand, one bogging, a bit of missing side trim and now a rear shock that apparently isn’t quite as enthusiastic about the adventure as everyone else! 🔧🤣

But behind all the fun and stories from the road is what this Bash is really about.

The SmurfnTurps crew have been travelling through some of Queensland’s smaller regional communities, meeting local families and visiting schools with as few as 14 and 22 students. They’ve also had the opportunity to see firsthand where support from Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland is making a difference, including a $15,000 grant helping create a sensory play area at a school in Barcaldine.

That’s why Mick Mannion Fabrications is proud to be sponsoring Car 352.

There are still a few kilometres, corrugations and hopefully no more broken bits to go, but this Thursday the 2026 Queensland Variety Bash finishes right here in Gladstone! 💙

📍 Gladstone VMR car park
🚙 Bash cars arriving from around lunchtime
🏁 Finish line activities concluding by 4pm at the latest

If you’re around Gladstone, head down and give the SmurfnTurps crew and all the Bash cars a big welcome home.

And to Car 352… just keep that rear shock together until Thursday! 😂🔧

A strong future for Central and Northern Queensland will come from building on the industries and capability we already have, while being ready for the opportunities ahead.

A couple of weeks ago, Matt attended the Resource Industry Network August Industry Briefing in Mackay, hearing from some of the people helping shape that future.

Bravus Mining and Resources CEO Mick Crowe spoke about balancing new opportunities with the strong industries that continue to underpin our regional economy, while Steven Boxall from the Resources Centre of Excellence shared an update on its new partnership with The University of Queensland and highlighted the incredible capability available right here in Mackay through FlexiLab.

Jarrah Steen from Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) then brought the bigger picture together with the official launch of the Mackay and Greater Whitsunday Critical Minerals Roadmap, providing a strategic look at what the emerging critical minerals sector could mean for our region.

For Mick Mannion Fabrications, events like these are valuable because they give local businesses a clearer understanding of where industry is heading, where future opportunities may emerge and how the capability that already exists across Central Queensland can be part of what comes next.

Great to see so much focus on ensuring regional businesses and regional capability remain at the centre of that future.

💙 GO SMURFN TURPS! | CAR 352 💙

There are sponsorships you put your name on, and then there are sponsorships you have a whole lot of fun following! 😂

Mick Mannion Fabrications is proud to be sponsoring Variety Bash Car 352 - SmurfnTurps as they take on the 2026 Queensland Variety Bash, raising money and awareness for Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland.

It all started yesterday (day 1) which from all accounts was pretty easy with the conditions so far — dirt roads, a little mud, plenty of laughs and a WHOLE lot of fun, all shared with some absolutely awesome people!

But in the lead up, that was a different story for the Smurf Mobile who had a proper introduction to Bash life.

Transmission troubles? ✔️
Roadside transmission oil change? ✔️
Run out of fuel? ✔️
Learn that “she’ll have enough to get there” isn't a particularly reliable fuel-management strategy? ✔️😂

But behind all the fun is a very worthwhile reason for doing it.

The Variety Bash helps raise funds to provide equipment and services, Variety Heart Scholarships, programs and experiences for kids who are sick, disadvantaged or living with disability, helping give them greater opportunities to reach their potential.

And this year's adventure is finishing right here in Gladstone, Thursday 27 August!

📍 Gladstone VMR car park
🚙 Bash cars arriving from around lunchtime
🏁 Finish line activities concluding by 4pm at the latest

If you're around Gladstone, head down, give all the Bashers a big welcome and keep an eye out for Car 352 and the Smurf Mobile. With the adventures they've had getting this far, we're sure they'll be pretty happy to see that finish line!

From all of us at Mick Mannion Fabrications, congratulations to the SmurfnTurps team. We're proud to have the MMF name travelling with you and even prouder to support what you're doing for Variety and Queensland kids.

Now just get the Smurf Mobile home without Gargamel making another appearance! 😂💙

We’re still trying to work out who’s responsible for this one…

Matt has somehow found himself nominated in the Top 25 Business Leaders for the Gladstone Chamber of Commerce & Industry's Best in Business Awards.

Naturally, our first question was who in the team nominated him. Everyone denied it.

Which left one obvious suspect… Matt himself.

He swears it wasn’t him and, judging by his reaction, he might actually be more surprised than the rest of us.

All jokes aside, it’s a great recognition and something we’re genuinely proud of. Matt puts a huge amount into Mick Mannion Fabrications, our team, our clients and the industries and communities we work with across the region.

For those that did put Matt’s name forward, thank you. It means a lot to know that someone outside our four walls has recognised the work he does.

Congratulations Matt. We might even believe you didn’t nominate yourself now.
