Possible…. Storm ☔️ warning ⚠️

Possible…. Storm ☔️ warning ⚠️

HEADS UP: Tomorrow we will see isolated severe thunderstorm activity move west of Brisbane.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop from about 2 o’clock in the afternoon west of Brisbane and through Central Queensland, and also in a much more significant capacity over the border into Northeast New South Wales.

These thunderstorms are expected to bring large hail, damaging wind gusts and some moderate rainfall. Very dangerous Severe thunderstorms are possible over the border into New South Wales, with the risk of giant hailstones possible.

Southeast Queensland Thunderstorms will begin developing around 330 in the afternoon, likely around the Toowoomba and Warwick area. Conditions here aren’t extremely favourable for thunderstorms, however one or two strong potentially severe cells are possible. The strongest storm activity will be through the scenic rim and over the Darling Downs, not in the Brisbane area.

By 5 o’clock thunderstorm activity will be pushing into the Wivenhoe Outlook, likely as an upscaled system of squalls. If storms were to make it into the Brisbane or the Gold Coast area, which is not overly likely at this time, they will be substantially weaker and non-severe. Some strong wind gusts and a few bolts of lightning is all you can expect in the Brisbane area.

I’ll have a separate forecast for New South Wales later today, because the situation particularly to the northern parts of New South Wales around Moree and lightning Ridge, through the north east slopes, and the mid north coast, looks particularly dangerous for a few spots. Widespread supercell thunderstorm activity is expected.

Thank you for taking a read all. This is not a concern for Queensland but certainly something to keep an eye on, storms once again forecast to wash out weekend plans for some. Cheers Josh.

Higgins Storm Chasing

Well Queensland this is actually it, the biggest rain bearing system of the season and likely to be the grand finale! We have been tracking this positive phase Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) east across the Indian Ocean from Africa for 3 weeks and now it is here. The MJO is also expected to stall over Australia & Queensland for the next week or 2 giving the tropics a constant steroid hit. Instead of producing a cyclone for QLD, a westerly monsoon wind burst is wrapping around the eastern side of an inland low embedded deep into western parts of the state. A large high is double feeding the low with moist easterly winds across the entire Coral Sea.
The end result of the above weather jargon is widespread rain and storms across most of QLD for the next week with very big totals and flooding in it - ESPECIALLY nearest to the low as it tracks slowly east and the trough that extends north.
***Let's get SEQLD out of the way first... We are in a real grey area for rain with the lighter totals of 20-50mm forecast ATM. Good news for people on the coast but bad news for inland areas like the Darling Downs, Granite Belt and South Burnett where it is still very dry in places. Activity will try really hard to come down from the North and West - see what happens.
***Central QLD Bundy, Gladstone to Rocky and inland areas up there plus Southern inland QLD St George, Roma, Cunnamulla to Thargo I really hope you eventually get the 50-100mm forecast this week because it is much needed.
***Bowen to Cairns including Townsville & Ingham ect be aware of rain and storms that train in east to west on wind convergence areas. They could cause heavy rain and some flash flooding but you should be safe from any major flooding at this stage due to the 100-300mm totals which rivers can handle - that's not to say 200mm won't fall in 1 day though.
***Western QLD, North West, Central West & Central Inland from Burketown to Birdsville east to Longreach and maybe even Emerald - LOOK OUT these forecast totals are BIG. Widespread 150 - 250mm in the yellow circled areas with peak totals to 500. Some places have already cracked 100mm on the first day with another week to go. For those who don't know inland QLD it has a massive catchment area so doesn't take much rain to flood, cut off roads and become isolated for weeks. It is not all doom and gloom though so don't get me wrong - provided farmers and graziers have prepared themselves and their livestock well this could go down as the best rainfall they have had in many years. Filling dams, creeks, tanks while bringing the country to life with feed before Winter. Their downside could be weeks of flood damage repairs to fences and roads ect.
Based off this rainfall forecast MAJOR flooding of rivers and creeks are likely and along with vast flood inundation of low lying or flat country. Many roads will be cut for days or weeks.
Travellers you should get out of dodge now before it's too late or at least get to a major town and batten down so that you have access to enough supplies.
Stay safe everyone :)
