The above comparisons are by no means a bid to diminish the importance or decrease the need on any level. It’s to simply put a comparison example that’s relative to an encounter the majority of people can understand, which is health advice.

This theory gets thrown around a bit, but there is something significant truth attached to it when it’s broken down. The ease of online searching and comparing material costs is sometimes enough to deter people from using certain pre-finished materials, however without taking into account ongoing maintenance and upkeep, it doesn’t always give an accurate comparison, particularly for those renovating or adding to a property you intend to hold on to or occupy for a longer period of time.
At the end of the day, cost and personal preference will generally dictate the majority decisions when it comes to choosing your materials- however if you are someone that enjoys doing very little around the house after work or on weekends, it’s worth considering what materials you can incorporate into your renovations to assist with this.
Particularly in external applications with our climate - timber & painted surfaces are going to need maintaining. The money you save on the initial cost of materials can be quickly overtaken by the ongoing maintenance required to keep them looking the way they were when they were installed. It’s also important to weigh up how much you think your time is worth, not just the cost of the materials you need to maintain.
