‘Safety first’ message in hard-hitting campaign to highlight the deadly consequences of working live.
Working ‘live’ is the leading cause of burns, shocks, serious accidents and fatalities for electricians. To help keep workers safe, Building and Energy has launched a campaign with the simple message, Working Live Kills.

Master Electricians Australia backs this message. No job is worth risking your life. Turn the power off, every time.

Homeowners, plan ahead to avoid disruption when the power is shut down:

• Can you work from the office that day?
• Is it a good chance to enjoy a day out?
• Have you backed up devices and allowed time to reset clocks and appliances?

As industry leaders, our goal is simple: every electrician gets home safe. Respect the safety rules and let your tradie switch off before they start.

The campaign is rolling out across digital media, radio, streaming and billboards featuring West Coast Eagles captain Liam Duggan. Look out for messages such as:

“Test before you touch”
“Old habits die hard. People die fast”
“Kill your old habits before they kill you”
“Don’t want to die? Don’t work live”

The safest job is a de‑energised job. Put safety first and keep every sparkie safe.

Got rooftop solar? Today’s the time to turn off it off before Alfred hits.

Every system will have slightly different steps, so consult your manual or the installer’s shutdown procedures, which can usually be found at the inverter and/or on the main switchboard. However, as a guide, most will advise to turn off the inverter AC mains isolator, which is usually found in the meter box: it’s very important to turn the AC mains isolator off first, and then also to turn off the photovoltaic (PV) array DC isolator which is usually found next to the inverter.

⚠️ Even if the network is not operational and panels aren't supplying the home, solar systems can continue to generate direct current (DC) power

⚡NEVER climb onto the roof to check or touch the solar system or its components – if there’s any damage, the roof can be live

🔌Treat all solar panels and cables as though they’re live and dangerous

💦 Never touch inverters, switchboards or other electrical equipment if it’s wet, or if you’re standing in water

Queensland consumers have unfortunately fallen victim to dodgy marketplace tradespeople who fail to deliver on their promises. These individuals, operating primarily online, accept payment but fail to provide the agreed-upon services, leaving customers out of pocket. This concerning trend has prompted warnings from Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Yvette D’Ath, urging consumers to be vigilant when hiring tradespeople, especially when advertising online.

In 2023, the Office of Fair Trading prosecuted 14 tradies who accepted money but failed to provide construction services and didn’t refund customers. In all 14 cases the operators were found to be using online marketplaces to attract their customers. Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Yvette D’Ath commented, “this is incredibly concerning and a reminder to everyone who is looking online to remain vigilant and do your research.” She also added that “it’s ebay for dodgy operators to set up online profile and hide behind the anonymity of social media.” Calling for consumers to look to more referral and word of mouth based methods for finding reliable tradies.

We take electrical appliances at home for granted but we must remember that we can’t be complacent when using them.
Check your electrical appliances and equipment before you plug them in and use them. The following could cause a fire or electric shock:
⚡ Broken casings and cracked plastic covers
⚡ Changes in colour from overheating and moisture
⚡ Water in the appliance
⚡ Frayed leads or damaged plugs
⚡ Damaged extension leads
⚡ Full or dirty filters
If your electrical appliances have any of these problems, dispose of them immediately.
