The IoT Parking System project is a strong example of how product development has to think beyond the idea itself.

For this project, the client needed a parking barrier system that could work across both undercover car parks and outdoor parking areas. It had to be:
- Wireless and battery-operated
- Easy to install
- Simple for drivers to use
- Reliable enough to operate over long periods between charging

Boost Design worked across the electronics and firmware development, helping bring the system from concept through to a functional connected product.

The project involved wireless technology selection, component sourcing, PCB design, firmware development, prototyping, testing and production documentation.

A project like this shows how many decisions sit behind a product that feels simple to the end user.

Designing a product properly is not just about making it work long enough to outlast the warranty.

This battery pack was designed so the cells can be replaced without throwing away the whole unit. The main housing, control electronics, and other components can be kept, serviced, and used for longer.

The results are clear.

Less waste. Lower replacement costs. A more practical product for the end user.

Because when something is built for real world use, serviceability matters just as much as performance.

Most buses and large passenger vehicles still rely on the driver to notice who hasn’t buckled up.

Bucklemeup changes that.

Bucklemeup is a Bluetooth-enabled seatbelt safety system that quietly keeps track of each passenger seat. If a belt isn’t latched, the driver gets a clear alert on the dashboard.

Behind the scenes, this took a lot of engineering. We developed the contactless sensing technology, the wireless communication protocols, and the firmware to make sure it worked reliably without draining battery life. That meant plenty of testing across different vehicles and conditions.

One of the big wins is how easy it is to install for the user. The system can be fitted to most passenger vehicles, including older ones, with no major modifications or complex wiring.

The project was recognised with an Australian Good Design Award, with judges highlighting its value in the mass-transit sector.

An IP rating is not a magic label that makes a product dustproof and waterproof. It is a test requirement.

The design has to deliver on that promise through the enclosure, seals, gaskets, materials and the way the product is assembled.

For products used outdoors or around water, this process is critical.

A product isn’t proven when it looks good in CAD.

It’s proven when you can hold it, test it, assemble it and see how it behaves in the real world.

This is where high-fidelity prototyping becomes valuable.

At this stage, the goal is no longer just proving that the idea works. It’s about getting much closer to the final product.
Testing how the parts fit together. How the user interacts with it. How it feels in hand. Testing whether the design decisions still make sense outside of a screen.

A prototype can reveal things CAD often won’t.

Parts that are awkward to assemble. Surfaces that don’t feel right. Details that look fine digitally but don’t work properly once built. Small design choices that could create issues later in manufacturing, usability or performance.

That’s why prototyping is such an important part of product development. It gives you the chance to refine the design before committing to tooling, production and larger investment.

Not all hardware projects are built the same, and the costs reflect that.

A simple product might move quickly. But once you step into complex electronics, custom mechanical parts, embedded systems, or regulated industries, everything starts stacking up.

More disciplines.
More testing.

That’s why asking “how much does it cost?” only tells half the story.

Material selection isn’t just about how a product looks.

The right material needs to suit the way the product works, how it is manufactured, and how it performs over time.

For products with electronics, that can also mean thinking about heat, signal performance and long-term reliability.

Choose the wrong material, and small issues can become major design problems later.
