Bricklayer Hannah Bramble thrives on variety.

One day she is laying bricks on a new home build, the next she is restoring existing structures, replacing walls or reshaping spaces. No two days look the same, and that is exactly how she likes it.

Hannah entered the trade “on a whim,” after seeing a bricklaying video on TikTok and contacting her local TAFE to enrol in a pre-apprenticeship. Four years later, she has not looked back.

She values working outdoors, the tangible results of her work and the constant opportunity to learn. Her advice to women considering a trade?

⭐Find people who back you.
⭐Seek out a good mentor.
⭐Choose employers who value safety and fairness.
⭐And remember! Confidence grows with time and experience.

Read Hannah’s full story on the She Builds the Future website and be inspired by her journey into bricklaying.

Women make up just 13–16% of Australia’s construction workforce. When it comes to on-the-tools trade roles, that number drops to around 3–5%.

That means fewer than 1 in 6 people across the industry are women, and even fewer are tradies shaping our homes on site... Even though residential construction is responsible for building the communities we live in....

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, imagine what adding more diverse perspectives, skills, and leadership into the workplace could unlock for the future of homebuilding.

The opportunity is significant, not just for gender equity, but for innovation, productivity and industry sustainability.

How can we attract and retain more women in residential construction? Tag someone helping to shift the dial and let us know your thoughts below.

🌟 She Builds the Future in action 🌟
Through our She Builds the Future program, The House That She Built is finding its way into schools and community groups across Australia. More young people are being introduced to the possibilities within the building industry – and the feedback has been wonderful.

One of our favourite moments so far came from Newcastle during Book Week, where 9-year-old Billie chose The House That She Built as her costume. Dressed in overalls and holding a house, she looked just like the cover – and she owned the role with pride. 💙

It is moments like these that show the power of this program – inspiring the next generation to see themselves as part of building the future.

Each month, we will be highlighting the journey of a woman in construction. First cab off the rank is builder, Colleen May.

Colleen is the General Manager of May Constructions, a commercial and multi-residential building company. She is hands-on across every part of the business – from compliance and operations to strategy and growth.

‘The building industry today is very complex. We are expected to be experts in more than just construction,’ Colleen says. ‘That’s why being a member of HIA is invaluable. They have our back.’

Colleen brings a business mindset to building, holding a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Canberra. She went on to become HIA Victoria’s first – and only – female President in 2008.

‘I was acutely aware of the responsibility that came with that role,’ she says. ‘There were some raised eyebrows at the time, but the support I received was overwhelming.’

Colleen’s advice?
‘There are so many opportunities to follow your passion in this industry. I have ended up on paths I never could have imagined.’
