Three holes were missing from this large structural steel cleat, so the wall brace could not be bolted into position.

First, I lined up the brace and marked the exact hole centres. Then I used a battery-powered mag drill to drill all three holes through the cleat.

Once the holes were finished, we lined the wall brace back up and locked it into position using M30 bolts.

Would you drill these holes on-site, or send the cleat back for modification?

This M36 structural bolt needed between 2,500–3,000 Nm on this job.
After showing the size of the M36, I tensioned the connection while getting a close-up of the DTI washer working under load.
That orange indicator makes it pretty satisfying to watch. 👀

This roof rafter had both a noticeable bow and twist, so the whole section had to be pulled back into the correct position.
We first loosened the connected purlins so the rafter could move, then rigged a come-along from the opposite rafter and gradually pulled the steel back into line.
Once the rafter moved, the original purlin holes no longer lined up, which showed how much the connection had shifted during the correction.
The purlin connections then had to be realigned, reworked and bolted back together in their new position.
Unfortunately I lost the final wide shot showing the finished rafter, but you can clearly see the movement through the change in the purlin connections and hole positions.
Would you use a come-along for a bowed and twisted rafter like this, or use another method? 👇

Installing knee braces onto a 40-metre structural steel column using a 135-foot boom lift.

First, we loaded the braces, bolts and tools into the boom basket. Then we travelled up the column, installed the first brace and used a time-lapse to show the rest of the installation.

The view is good—but there is not much room for error at this height.

Would you work 40 metres above the ground?

These wall-plate holes didn’t line up properly with the ferrules, so the bolts couldn’t be installed.

First I marked exactly where material needed to be removed, then used a die grinder to carefully widen the two holes.

Once the holes lined up, the bolts went through and the connection could be tightened off.

A small alignment issue, but enough to stop the connection completely.

How would you have fixed this one?

I was asked to test a DTI washer VS turn of nut using a hydraulic torque wrench... so I finally did.

For this test, I rotated the nut to **150°** and then checked the DTI washer using a feeler gauge.

I genuinely wasn't expecting the result. 😳

This is simply the outcome from **this particular test and setup**—it's not intended to replace your project's bolting procedure or specifications. Always follow the approved installation and inspection requirements for your job.

This roof purlin was ready to be installed, but there was one problem — the cleat it needed to bolt to was missing.
I prepped the steel, marked the correct location, positioned the cleat and welded it into place.
After cleaning up the weld, it was time for the real test — dropping the purlin back into position and seeing whether the bolt lined up.
Straight through. ✅

This cleat was on the wrong side of the beam, so it needed three new holes to match the cleat on the opposite side.

The first two holes were drilled using a Milwaukee battery-powered mag drill, but the centre hole was impossible to reach, so the oxy torch came out to finish the job.

Sometimes you've just got to use the right tool for the situation.
