This column was missing a knee brace on the left side, while the right side already had one installed 😳

To fix it:
✔️ Weld on a cleat
✔️ Install the knee brace
✔️ Bolt drill it into the panel
✔️ Finish the connection solid 🔥

Method 1: Grease on nut face.
Method 2: Grease on the threads only.

Both bolts were marked before tightening and torqued to 1700 Nm using torque tools.

Surprisingly… both reached the same result.

What method do you use on site?

This steel fabrication was 100mm off, so we had to weld in a new 500mm flat plate for the roller door attachment 🔥

The process:
✔️ Grind back the gal paint
✔️ Fit the new plate
✔️ Add backing plates for support
✔️ Fully weld the connection
✔️ Crack the slag off 😮‍💨

Real site problem solving in structural steel work.

This M30 structural bolt was in one of the worst positions — blocked by timber with almost no access.

Using a torque gun, we managed to slide in from the back and still bring it up to proper tension.

Sometimes on site, you’ve got to get creative to get the job done.

This beam-to-beam connection was left with a gap, so we used a shim wedge to pull everything tight before fully welding it into the connection 🔥

Once welded, the whole connection becomes one solid piece.

Real structural steel work on site — simple process, but critical for proper fit-up and strength.

This bay was missing a fly brace connecting the beam to the purlin.

To install it we first fabricated a steel cleat, welded it to the beam, and applied a quick coat of paint.

A new hole was drilled in the purlin so the fly brace could be bolted in and the bay properly braced.

A simple structural fix during steel er****on.

Torquing an M30 structural bolt using a $15,000 torque gun — and it barely fits between the beam and panel.

High torque. Tight access. No room for error.

This is what structural steel looks like when tolerances get real.

Would you trust this clearance?

Using a $15,000 torque gun on an M30 bolt — but without proper setup, it can twist and become dangerous fast.

Simple fix: pack it properly so the torque has somewhere to go.

Small detail… big difference.

Torquing a structural bolt using a $15,000 torque gun and checking it with a feeler gauge and DTI washer.

Step by step torque process:

900 Nm – bolt still loose
1300 Nm – DTI washer starts squeezing dye
1700 Nm – bolt fully torqued with no gap

This shows how torque and bolt tension build as you approach the final specification.
