⚡ CRANKS BUT WON’T START — SOMETIMES THE PROBLEM ISN’T THE FUEL PUMP.

This Subaru had us out for a mobile no-start diagnosis.

The engine would crank but wouldn’t fire, pointing us towards a fuel supply issue. Rather than just fitting a fuel pump and hoping for the best, we worked through the system to find out why the pump wasn’t operating.

Once we accessed the fuel pump, the problem became pretty obvious.

🔥 Burnt electrical terminal at the fuel pump connection.

The photos tell the story — the terminal had overheated badly enough to damage the connector and pin, causing a poor electrical connection to the pump.

This is exactly why proper fault finding matters.

A crank/no-start doesn’t automatically mean:
❌ Bad fuel pump
❌ Bad starter
❌ Bad battery
❌ “Must be the computer”

Sometimes one damaged electrical connection is enough to leave the whole car sitting in the driveway.

🔧 A LITTLE OIL LEAK CAN MAKE A BIG MESS

Another one through AHM this week for an engine oil leak.

Tracked this one back to the rocker cover gasket, so off came the intake and rocker cover to get access and repair it properly.

While we’re in there, everything gets inspected, sealing surfaces cleaned and the job put back together properly — not just degreased and sent back out the door.

Oil leaks are one of those things that are easy to keep putting off. A small weep today can turn into oil all over the engine, burning smells, smoke, damaged hoses and belts, or a much bigger repair bill down the track.

WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE’RE NOT TURNING SPANNERS?

Usually… find somewhere a bit more difficult to turn them. 😂

Dirt bikes and adventure riding have always been a big part of life outside the workshop.

From jungle riding through Vietnam, to following the Mekong through Laos, getting off the beaten track and seeing places you’d never find from the back seat of a tour bus.

And when you’re riding through the middle of nowhere overseas, you quickly learn that mechanical problems don’t care how far you are from the nearest workshop.

Broken bikes, running repairs, whatever tools you can find and figuring out how to get moving again — bush mechanics, international edition. 🔧😂

There’s something pretty bloody good about a dirt bike, a few mates and having absolutely no idea what’s around the next corner.

These days there’s a lot more time spent turning spanners at AHM, but when we get the chance to switch off, two wheels and a dirt track is still pretty hard to beat.

🔧 TRAILER WIRING SORTED

Not everything that comes through AHM has an engine.

This old tandem trailer came in needing some attention to the electrical side of things.

We rewired the trailer, fitted new LED tail lights and ran the wiring properly in protective conduit, secured along the chassis and finished off with a new trailer plug.

Simple job, but one worth doing properly — especially on trailers that spend their life outside, get knocked around and are expected to just work every time they’re hooked up.

🔧 HYDRAULIC CYLINDER REPAIRS

This one came apart for a reason.

Once stripped down, the problem was pretty clear — worn and damaged seals that had reached the end of their life.

A cylinder that’s bypassing internally can start creeping under load, losing holding pressure or simply not producing the force it should.

We don’t just throw a seal kit at it and send it out the door. We strip it down and inspect the rod, piston, barrel, gland and sealing surfaces before rebuilding it properly.

“It just needs a regas…” 👀

Sometimes it does. Sometimes there’s a reason the gas disappeared in the first place. All 570g of it ?

This Mitsubishi came in with the A/C not doing its job.

Rather than just filling it up and sending it back out, we leak tested the system and tracked the refrigerant leak down at the compressor.

That’s why proper A/C diagnosis matters.

WHEN DID YOU LAST CHECK YOUR TRAILER BEARINGS? 👀

If the answer is “no idea”… it might be time.

We pulled this trailer down for a bearing service and found exactly why they’re worth checking before they become a roadside problem.

Old grease, corrosion, tired bearings and plenty of years of dirt hiding behind the drums.

FAILED A PIT INSPECTION? We’ve got you covered. 🔧

There’s nothing worse than going over the pits, getting handed a list of defects and then having to run around finding different places to sort everything out.

Bring the list to us.

Oil leaks, coolant leaks, timing belts, water pumps, lights, wipers, mechanical defects, EGR systems that have been illegally modified or blanked off — we can work through the defects and get the vehicle back to where it needs to be for inspection.

We can also organise windscreens where required, so you’re not chasing half a dozen different people just to get the vehicle sorted.

Book it in with us for a pre-inspection check first. We’ll go over the vehicle and look for the same sort of things that are likely to cause you grief at inspection.

Finding a leaking seal, blown light, worn wiper or other obvious defect before you’re standing at the inspection station can save another booking, another trip and more downtime.

This VW came to us after failing its inspection. We worked through the defect list, carried out the repairs and got it ready to head back.
