To mark World Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July, we joined Royal Life Saving Society WA for their annual World Drowning Prevention Day Breakfast with many other organisations committed to creating safer communities and improving water safety across WA.

The event featured an inspiring panel of speakers, including Colin Hassell OAM, who reflected on his leadership of the Swim Across Australia initiative, Ciara Galega, who shared insights on inclusive water safety programs, and Zainab Hummed from ASeTTS, who highlighted the importance of water safety education for refugees settling in WA.

MEPAU was pleased to attend the event as a proud partner of Royal Life Saving WA โ€“ through the Waitsia Joint Venture, MEPAU and Beach Energy have been supporting the delivery of essential water safety education programs in the Mid West for the last two years, and recently renewed that partnership for a further three years.

Over the next three years, more than 2,100 vulnerable children in the Shires of Irwin, Coorow, Carnamah, and the City of Greater Geraldton will be provided with water safety classes and have access to subsidised Swim and Survive programs, building the confidence and skills needed to stay safe in and around water.

Over the last decade, the Mid West region has recorded WAโ€™s second-highest drowning rate, reflecting the significant need for these programs. Regional children are 3.3 times more likely to drown than those in metropolitan areas, and the Waitsia Joint Venture is committed to addressing that gap.

Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) was represented by site staff; Kevin Nel and Gareth Spencer, who were pleased to attend the Cup and support the event. Throughout the day, they assisted with scoring and goal umpiring while also cheering on WAโ€™s emerging talent in action. It was a fantastic day that showcased the studentsโ€™ talent and teamwork. Congratulations to the boys who took part!

Waitsia Gas Project joint venturers MEPAU and Beach Energy are proud to partner with the Clontarf Foundation and support two Mid West Academies, benefiting approximately 130 students.

The Port Denison Skate Precinct has been upgraded, providing the Dongaraโ€“Port Denison community with a refreshed space to gather, connect and enjoy the outdoors.

The precinct now features a new permanent shade structure, picnic seating, barbecue facilities, a water fountain and paved access pathways, creating a more welcoming and accessible space for everyone.

This community-led project, driven by the Dongara Denison Lions Club Inc and supported by the Shire of Irwin, Dongara Menโ€™s Shed and local community groups, was made possible through collaboration across the community. Through the Waitsia Joint Venture, Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) and Beach Energy contributed $75,000 to support this community initiative.

Representatives from the Dongara Denison Lions Club, the Shire of Irwin, Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU), the Dongara Menโ€™s Shed and local community groups recently gathered to celebrate the completion of the project and recognise the collective effort behind this outstanding community asset.

Thank you to everyone involved for helping bring this vision to life and creating a space that will benefit the Dongaraโ€“Port Denison community for years to come. MEPAU is pleased to support projects that strengthen the communities where we operate.

The WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) at The University of Western Australia, together with Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation, Yamatji Elders, and Aboriginal community members, has launched Earth to Table, a recipe book showcasing the regionโ€™s rich cultural food knowledge.

This initiative was supported through a Waitsia Mid West Community Grant, funded by Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) and joint venture partner Beach Energy. The recipe book highlights culturally significant recipes and cooking practices that reflect strong connections to Country, identity, and community. Through storytelling and shared learning, Earth to Table celebrates cultural diversity, promotes healthy cooking, and helps preserve cultural food knowledge across the Mid West.

Student dietitians co-designed the resource alongside Yamatji Elders and families, with Yamatji participants guiding the project through cultural leadership, knowledge, and insight. The result is a community-owned resource that honours both traditional foods and contemporary dishes. It also features artwork developed with local Yamatji artist and mentor Beau Simpson.

The launch at Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (GRAMS) brought community members together to share dishes from the book and celebrate its release.

The recipe book is available to download via the WACRH website: https://www.wacrh.uwa.edu.au/2026/05/Celebrating-Jambinu-Geraldton-cultural-food-knowledge

Taking flight for the 2026 Great Cocky Count

NACC NRM will deliver BirdLife WAโ€™s Great Cocky Count across the Mid West on 12 April 2026, coordinating activities in the Shires of Irwin and Chapman Valley. The event forms part of the House and Home: Saving Native Species initiative, led by NACC NRM and sponsored by Mitsui E&P (MEPAU) and Beach Energy.

The program has already achieved several benefits. A critically endangered flowering bush in the Mid West has gone from a single known plant to multiple healthy seedlings, providing a vital food source for Carnabyโ€™s cockatoos. European honey bees have also been removed from tree hollows, creating more safe nesting spaces for the cockatoos.

Ahead of the count, NACC NRM hosted a Great Cocky Count workshop in Geraldton, led by Biodiversity Program Coordinator Jarna Kendle. BirdLife volunteers, including Alice Bishop and Heather Beswick, as well as Merryn Pryor, BirdLifeโ€™s WA Black Cockatoo Project Coordinator, joined the session to share knowledge and tips with participants.

The Great Cocky Count brings communities together across Western Australia, helping track Carnabyโ€™s cockatoo populations. With these birds raising only one chick per season, every observation is critical, giving volunteers a direct role in conservation efforts.

If you would like to take part in the 2026 count, you may follow this late registration link to sign up - https://birdlife.org.au/late-registrations/
