A message to builders, developers, construction managers and project supervisors.

I wasn’t going to make another “look at our work” post.

You’ve seen enough of those.

Instead, I put together this guide based on years of conversations with builders, developers, homeowners and project managers throughout Melbourne.

The same story keeps coming up.

One of our recent medium-density developments required a unique solution where adjoining homes sat at different levels. Rather than compromise valuable backyard space, we constructed a custom engineered L-channel retaining system incorporating welded steel reinforcement, concrete topping slab and structural backfill. The result was the creation of an additional car space while preserving the usable outdoor areas for both properties.

Every site is different, and the best retaining wall solution is often about much more than retaining soil. It’s about creating usable space, solving engineering challenges, improving drainage, protecting infrastructure and enhancing the overall appearance of the development.

🌿 Creating depth, texture & year-round impact 🌿

This garden is a perfect example of how thoughtful plant selection can completely transform a space into something that feels lush, layered and alive.

Here we’ve used a combination of:

• Ligularia (Tractor Seat Plant) – those big, glossy round leaves you see throughout. These thrive in shaded, moisture-rich areas and absolutely love conditions like we’re seeing now. Cooler temps + consistent moisture = explosive, healthy growth.

• Echeveria succulents – low maintenance, structured contrast. While everything else is soft and leafy, these bring form, colour variation and drought tolerance.

• Rhapis Palm (Lady Palm) – adds height and that tropical feel without overpowering the space. Great for sheltered positions and performs well in Melbourne/VIC conditions.

• Mixed ferns & foliage plants – used to soften edges and create that natural, rainforest-style layering.

💧 Why this works right now
This time of year, with cooler weather and regular rainfall, these plants thrive. The Ligularia in particular will push strong leaf growth, while the palms and ferns hold structure and richness without stress from heat.

MEET RHYS FROM APPRENTICE TO SITE SUPERVISOR Some team members just stand out from day one — and Rhys is definitely one of them.

Rhys joined ANKS Construction & Landscaping at just 17 years old, starting his apprenticeship with us. It didn’t take long to realise he was going to go far. His work ethic, attitude, and willingness to learn were well beyond his years — and that hasn’t changed.

Now at 20 years old and a third-year apprentice, we’ve watched Rhys grow into a highly skilled and trusted member of our team. He’s now a fully ticketed machine operator, confidently operating bobcats, excavators, crane trucks, and just about anything with a motor. He also has strong experience across irrigation installs, retaining walls, rock walls, structural landscaping, and a sharp eye for levels.

A lot of this drive comes from his passion outside of work — Rhys is a dedicated speedway race car driver. The same focus, precision, and determination he brings to racing, he brings to every project.

Rhys has naturally stepped into more of a leading hand role, guiding trades and labour to ensure projects run smoothly and efficiently. Recently, on our Mernda school project, Rhys coordinated site operations, managed material deliveries, operated machinery, supervised labour, and delivered exceptional care to the surrounding environment. His leadership and professionalism were second to none.

But beyond the skills and leadership, Rhys is simply a great person to have on the team. Always five minutes early. Never complains. Always ready to take on a challenge. We’ve received many compliments about his work ethic — and we couldn’t agree more.

And of course… we can’t forget the nickname.
While most know him as Rhys… around here he’s also known as Hotdog— thanks to his love of hotdogs 🌭
