A message to builders, developers, construction managers and project supervisors.
I wasn’t going to make another “look at our work” post.
You’ve seen enough of those.
Instead, I put together this guide based on years of conversations with builders, developers, homeowners and project managers throughout Melbourne.
The same story keeps coming up.
A project runs well for months.
The structure is great.
The finishes are great.
The client is happy.
Then the final stage arrives…
Landscaping.
Suddenly there are delays, excuses, scope variations, communication issues, unfinished works, finger pointing between trades and a frustrated client wondering why the project doesn’t feel complete.
The reality is that landscaping isn’t the finishing touch.
It’s the final impression.
It’s the last thing your client sees before handover.
And often, it’s the part they remember most.
A builder can deliver an exceptional home, but if the outdoor works feel rushed, incomplete or poorly coordinated, that’s what walks away with the client.
Over the last few years I’ve noticed a shift in accountability across many trades.
Too often I’m being asked:
“Can you come fix this?”
“Can you finish what someone else started?”
“Can you rectify this retaining wall?”
“Can you solve this drainage issue?”
The cost isn’t just financial.
It’s time.
It’s stress.
It’s your reputation.
This guide isn’t designed to sell landscaping.
It’s designed to help builders identify the red flags before they appoint a contractor.
Because good landscaping shouldn’t create problems.
It should protect your programme, protect your margin and enhance the final handover experience.
If you’re involved in luxury residential homes, medium-density developments, architecturally designed projects or commercial construction, I’d be interested to hear whether you’ve seen the same trends.
And if you’re looking for a landscaping partner who understands construction, sequencing, accountability and builder expectations — let’s have a conversation.
