🚧 WHAT’S HAPPENING ON BRIGGS ROAD, IPSWICH? 🚧

If you’ve driven along Briggs Road recently, you may have noticed a significant new development taking shape.

Located just down the road from both the H&G Contractors office and McAully’s current Smash Repairs location, we are proud to be delivering the new McAully’s Smash Repairs facility at 104A Briggs Road, Raceview.

The project is particularly special to our team as it brings together two long-standing Ipswich businesses and contributes to the continued growth of our local region.

The new purpose-built automotive repair and refinishing facility has been designed to support a high-capacity collision repair operation and provide McAully’s Smash Repairs with a modern, efficient environment to support its continued growth and service delivery.

If you've spent any time around H&G, chances are you've met Andrew Riek (The Big Engine).

A familiar face for more than 20 years, Andrew is H&G’s most experienced Site Supervisor. Known for his calm approach, wealth of experience and meticulous attention to detail, he’s helped deliver countless projects with a reputation for knowing every detail of a build.

They say Andrew knows every project like the back of his hand. In reality, he probably knows the plans even better. Around H&G, his attention to detail has become a legacy, and if anyone has a question on site, chances are Andrew already has the answer.

Construction has always been a big part of Andrew’s life. Growing up with a carpenter for a father, he was introduced to the industry from a young age, working alongside his dad on renovations and new homes before building a career spanning more than 50 years in construction. His open builders supervisor licence and decades of hands-on experience reflects the knowledge he brings to every project.

Since joining H&G, Andrew has played an important role in delivering many of the company’s most recognisable projects. Across more than two decades, he has helped bring countless builds to life from architectural homes to complex projects taking each one from a set of drawings through to completion.

For Andrew, successful projects come down to good planning, communication and teamwork.

While H&G has grown considerably over the years, Andrew says one thing that has never changed is the people. The supportive team, strong relationships and shared commitment to quality are what have kept him part of H&G for more than two decades.

H&G Heritage Highlights 💒👷🏻

Every project tells a story, and so does our business.

After speaking with Barney Dwyer last week and reflecting on one of his very first projects with H&G Contractors, it inspired us to begin this series: H&G Heritage Highlights.

As we share the heritage of H&G Contractors, it seemed only fitting to begin with a heritage building. Our first chapter takes us back to 2004 to the restoration of La Trobe Chapel on La Trobe Terrace, Paddington.

Originally built in the late 1800s, the chapel was purchased by marriage celebrant Rachel Ross, who envisioned transforming the historic church into a unique wedding venue. H&G was entrusted with bringing that vision to life.

It was no ordinary restoration. Before any refurbishment could begin the building had to be carefully re-levelled after developing a 75 mm lean to the east. Sitting on one of Paddington’s steep hillsides, excavation beneath the rear of the building was then completed to make way for expansion works.

From there, the restoration began to take shape. The original leadlight windows were carefully removed, restored and reinstalled, while the roof and bell tower were rebuilt. The chapel and residence were also refurbished prior to the new deck, fencing and landscaping to be completed, tying this project all together.

Today, La Trobe Chapel stands as an iconic wedding venue and a project well worth looking back on.

Some people leave a lasting impression wherever they go, and Barney Dwyer is certainly one of them.

Today, we reflect on Barney’s journey with H&G Contractors and celebrate another year. Happy Birthday Barney!🎂

Barney first joined H&G in 2003, bringing with him years of fabrication and site supervision experience. After already knowing director Myles Harm for many years, Barney joined the team and quickly became a familiar face across many H&G projects.

His first project was the refurbishment of the heritage listed Chapel on Latrobe Terrace in Paddington and over the next decade Barney played an important role across a variety of jobs. From overseeing sites and preparing shop drawings for fabrication, to organising H&G BBQs and helping establish the Social Club, Barney’s contribution went well beyond his role.

After completing his final new build project for H&G at the Apprenticeship QLD building in West Ipswich, Barney moved on to pursue other opportunities while still maintaining a strong friendship with the team over the years. Ten years later, at 69 years young, Barney returned in 2025 wanting to stay active, enjoy the camaraderie of the job site and continue helping wherever he could.

Outside of work, Barney is a proud family man with four children and nine grandchildren who keep him very busy. He is the oldest life member of the Ipswich Rugby Union Club where he spent 20 years on the committee. Barney also enjoys a round of golf and sharing his modest talents as a part-time singer.

As we wrap up another year at H&G Contractors, we want to thank everyone involved throughout the year. It has been a busy and rewarding period, made possible by the ongoing efforts of our team.

This afternoon, we enjoyed celebrating with everyone at our office BBQ before heading into a well-earned break. We are proud of what we’ve achieved and look forward to the year ahead.
