What if the Vivid G2 was active?

At Surrounds, some of the most rewarding projects challenge convention, inspire innovation and rethink how we design.

We recently undertook a project centred around a pair of Vivid Audio G2 loudspeakers, with the objective of configuring them as a fully active system.

The story behind makes this project even more interesting. Founded in 2004, Vivid Audio represents Laurence Dickie’s continued pursuit of loudspeaker innovation. Before establishing Vivid, Laurence was the designer behind one of the most iconic loudspeakers ever created — the 1993 Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus.

The G2 is traditionally a passive loudspeaker. Creating an active version required a completely different approach, allowing each driver in its four-way design—bass, lower midrange, upper midrange and tweeter—to be driven by its own dedicated amplifier channel.

Working with Vivid, we explored a solution that would allow the G2 to operate as either an active or passive loudspeaker. The result was a custom breakout system that allows the listener to seamlessly switch between the two configurations while preserving the speaker’s original design philosophy.

The system was commissioned: eight channels of Musical Fidelity amplification, one for every driver.

The result was exceptional.

What began as a bespoke solution for a single project became something much bigger, with Vivid incorporating active/passive flexibility across the G Series range.

McIntosh unveiled the new MA2375, its first vacuum tube integrated amplifier in more than a decade.
