Natural light is something we experience in a home every day, but where and when that light enters is very much an architectural decision.

At this Modern home in Seaforth, the orientation of the site influenced the placement of tall corner windows designed to bring winter sun into the home. Their position allows natural light to reach further into the living spaces during the cooler months, while also opening the interiors to views of the surrounding landscape.

It’s a relatively simple detail to look at once the home is complete, but one that began with an understanding of the site and how the family would experience the home throughout the year.

Industry recognition gives us an opportunity to look back at the homes we've created and the stories behind them.

Throughout August, we've revisited projects recognised for very different reasons, from navigating complex sites and planning requirements to delivering distinctive architectural styles and highly detailed construction.

What connects them is a commitment to creating homes that respond individually to their setting, their architecture and the people who live there. Each has its own character and story, which is ultimately what makes these projects worth revisiting.

We're proud when a Chateau home receives industry recognition, but even more so when it becomes a home our clients love living in.

There's a stage in every build when the home begins to feel real.

The structure is established, rooms start to take shape and the relationship between spaces becomes much easier to see. Ideas that have existed on drawings for months are suddenly experienced at full scale.

It's an exciting point in the journey for our clients and our team, but there's still plenty happening behind the scenes. Services are being coordinated, details checked and the next stages carefully planned as the project continues to progress.

We're looking forward to sharing more as this home takes shape.

A beautiful material can make an impact on its own, but the way different materials come together can have just as much influence on the finished space.

Stone meeting timber. Flooring transitioning between rooms. Joinery aligning with walls and architectural features. These junctions require careful planning well before the finishes are installed, particularly in a custom home where materials, dimensions and details can vary throughout the project.

When those transitions are executed well, your eye isn't necessarily drawn to them. Instead, the space simply feels cohesive.

It's a small part of the finished home, but one that reveals a great deal about the quality of the design and construction behind it.

When you walk into a beautifully finished home, which details tend to catch your eye first?

Long before the final photography, there are months of work happening behind the scenes on site.

Regular site inspections give our team the opportunity to review progress, check the quality of workmanship and make sure completed elements are protected as the build continues. Even something as simple as the green felt backed protecta board shown here has an important role, protecting newly finished flooring while trades complete the final stages of construction.

It's also where drawings meet reality. Dimensions are checked, trades are coordinated and decisions are made in response to the conditions in front of us.

These measures may never be visible in the finished photographs, but they're an important part of preserving the quality of the home right through to completion.

Some of the most important conversations during the design of a home are about how an idea will actually be built.

At Chateau, our architecture and construction teams work together from the beginning, allowing buildability, materials, detailing and site requirements to be discussed while the design is still taking shape. It means potential challenges can be identified earlier and solutions explored before they reach site.

For our clients, that creates greater continuity throughout the journey. The people responsible for bringing the design to life understand the thinking behind it, because they've been part of the conversation from the start.

It's an approach that has shaped the way we've designed and built custom homes for more than 50 years.

A strong architectural vision is only the beginning. Bringing it successfully to life requires just as much care in the development and construction that follows.

For this Vaucluse residence, the homeowners came to Chateau with an approved DA and a clear vision for their ultra-modern home. From there, the project continued through further design development, a Section 4.55 modification, council approval and detailed construction documentation before moving into the build.

The finished home is striking in its simplicity, with concrete canopies, generous ceiling heights and an abundance of natural light balanced by softer curves and warm, inviting interiors. Living spaces open directly to the alfresco and pool, while the upper-level master suite takes advantage of distant ocean views.

Winner of the 2023 HIA NSW Custom Built Home $1.5–$2 million category, Vaucluse Ultra Modern is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when a strong design vision is carried through every stage of construction.
