Front Retaining Wall Upgrade: Timber to Concrete 🧱

The JR team finished replacing this tired, rotting timber wall with a much cleaner, more permanent solution. The old timber had definitely seen better days, so we swapped it out for textured concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts.

It’s a massive boost for the home’s street appeal, but the real win is the durability. This setup is built to handle the elements with zero maintenance and won't rot or lean over time.

Every Element Carried Out to Perfection.

In these photos you can see the many stages involved in building a Besser block wall. These are the gold standard of retaining walls, and in rocky circumstances such as these where a concrete sleeper wall is not a viable option the Besser blocks reign supreme.

From an engineering perspective a Besser block wall has a huge amount of flexibility in regards to the footing design and detail. This means they can be built almost anywhere (as was the case on this project) not only in rock but in close proximity to the house and other structures.

Updated and significantly upgraded the retaining walls and yard for this very happy family in the Maitland area.

After removing the failing, falling over old walls, we doubled the useable area of this, previously split-level yard by cutting back the sloped ground level a further 8m.

Saving the client thousands of dollars in exporting the excavated fill, it was used for backfill against a smaller wall on the right which allowed us to raise the whole yard level up by 300mm. This blended the new yard level closer to the higher existing shed slab and driveway making the finished heights much more user friendly and accessible.

When you hit rock but have to roll on.

Unsurprisingly on a site cut this deep in the Lake Macquarie area we encountered substantial rock. Digging or drilling in rock would typically add on significant time and costs to any retaining wall project that requires footings or piering.

Solving this problem we opted for a Lego block 'gravity style' retaining wall. Pre-cast and moulded blocks allowing straight, neat lines with uniform perfection.

Each block you see weighs over 1000kgs. The sections that are 3 courses high are further reinforced with close to 25 tonnes of permeable concrete which strengthens the walls while still allowing drainage.

Replace the old timber wall with a nice new strong concrete and steel retaining wall.

The hedges above along with the neighbours close boundary wall increased the amount of stress / load to the area we had to work in. This required us to install the new retaining wall with added reinforcement which guaranteed the client a solid product for decades to come.

Another awesome result achieved however this is a great example of why the retaining walls must be installed before the house.

After the house install the builder left their client with their side yard exposed and collapsing. We were very lucky they still had room for us to get the machines in so we could build this wall. People are always surprised at the finished heights of their site cut, even on a block with a "slight slope"
