Throwback Thursday to a very personal project for us - our own home, .
If you’ve been following us for a while, you may have been part of the journey as we documented a great deal of this renovation back in 2022 and 2023.
It was a project that pushed us both creatively and personally.

The original home was a 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom home with one lounge. We transformed it into a 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home with two living areas, a new garage, pool and alfresco area.
And for the duration of the renovation, it remained our home.
We navigated the reality of transforming an existing home while still living in it, chipping away on weekends, often together as a family. So when we talk to clients about whether they should move out or stay during a renovation, we’re speaking from honest, lived experience.

The home was designed by us, alongside Darren from Mildura Building Designs and gave us the opportunity to step outside our comfort zone with design features including antique vanities, a black laundry, repurposed exposed timber beams and more character-driven finishes throughout.
One of our favourite parts of this project was the way the home connected with the existing trees. The palm trees became part of the courtyard outdoor shower, while the huge London plane tree was framed perfectly from the window at the end of the hallway. Jordan’s favourite room was the outdoor shower. Abby’s was the laundry. And Georgia still tells us she misses that pool.

This home went on to win a Master Builders Regional Building Award, which was a proud moment for a project that meant so much to us personally.

Putting WHC HQ to the test.
After sharing what has gone into the construction of the walls, we wanted to see how the office was actually performing on one of these cold Mildura mornings.

Interior wall temperature - 13.1°C
Single-glazed window temperature - 7.3°C
Exterior wall temperature - 5.6°C

An almost 8 degrees difference between inside and outside, with no mechanical heating utilised.

The difference is exactly why what goes behind the plaster matters.
Because of the insulation, air barrier and careful sealing of penetrations, warm air isn’t escaping as easily overnight, and cold air isn’t freely making its way in.

The windows are still temporary for now, repurposed from so we could move into the space sooner. They’ll eventually be replaced with triple-glazed windows, which will improve the performance even further.

For now, this is a great example of why high-performing elements matter. You may not see them once the walls are finished, but you absolutely feel the benefit over time.

WHC Global HQ Office 1 is complete (Almost)

We’ve officially moved into stage one of our new HQ, and we’re already feeling the benefits of what has gone into the construction of this space.

You may not be able to see what’s behind the walls, but you can feel it.

A stable, comfortable temperature. Less reliance on the air conditioner. And on these recent frosty mornings, a space that simply feels better to be in. We’ve done the thermal temperature showcase how effective it is, which we’ll share next week.
The windows are temporary for now, repurposed from our project, with our triple-glazed windows to be installed in the coming months. Once they go in, we’ll see an even greater improvement.

But for now, we’re enjoying the views, settling into the space, and experiencing first-hand the difference better building makes.

A subtle visual transformation, but a substantial structural transformation for the longevity of this home.

Our Buronga reclad project is complete.

This home had been experiencing significant water leaks, so we removed the existing cladding to properly assess what was happening underneath and rectify the issue correctly.
From there, we installed a new weather barrier and reclad the home, ensuring the external envelope is better protected for the years ahead.

Cladding isn’t just about the finished look. Installed properly, it plays an important role in protecting the home from moisture, weather and long-term damage.

This was a very satisfying project for both us and our clients, and we look forward to our clients enjoying their home for many years to come.

Bigger isn’t always better.
And premium selections aren’t always the priority.

When you’re building, there are a lot of decisions to make and the best way to work through them is by getting clear on what matters most.
In our initial conversations with clients, we talk through three key things:
• Your non-negotiables
• The things that would be nice
• The budget that needs to guide it all

This helps us understand where your priorities really sit.
For some clients, that might be more space. For others, it might be fewer square metres with higher-quality finishes. Or investing in the parts of the home that will impact the way it feels and functions every day.

The goal isn’t to build what looks good online or what happens to be on trend. It’s to build a home that suits your family, your lifestyle and your priorities.

Throwback Thursday to our Cureton Ave renovation and extension.
This was a 2020 project (an infamous year for many) which meant there were some unexpected challenges to navigate along the way, but the result was worth it.

This was a major renovation and extension for a young family. This project transformed a character-filled home into something that better suited the way they lived. The original home had plenty worth preserving, including high ceilings, existing timber floors and beautiful character details, but it needed to be brought into this century in a way that felt seamless.

What started as a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom home with one living space became a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom family home with three living areas, a butler’s pantry and a new outdoor entertaining space.
New raked ceilings through the kitchen and outdoor area kept the feeling of height and space, while skylights brought additional natural light into the kitchen. Weatherboard cladding was continued externally to match the original home, and the timber flooring was matched to create a consistent connection between old and new.

Maintaining the character of this home was important to us and our clients, while still introducing modern design, fixtures and finishes. Preserving what mattered, improving what was needed, and creating a home ready for the next chapter.

We’re in the final stretch of winter, and these last few cold weeks have us thinking about the warmer months ahead.

Air leaks in your home aren’t always obvious.

In our latest WHC Global HQ update, we showed what building airtight can look like in a new build.
But what about existing homes?

Most established homes have small gaps throughout the building envelope, around windows and doors, downlights, exhaust fans, skirting boards, plumbing penetrations and ceiling junctions.

Individually, they might seem minor.
Together, they can have a big impact on how your home feels, how much outdoor air gets in, and how hard your heating and cooling has to work.

This is one of the things Jordan looks at during our Better Living Brief.
He assesses how your home is performing now, identifies what may be affecting its comfort, and talks through what could be improved. Improving comfort doesn’t have to mean a major renovation. Sometimes it starts with understanding where your home is losing performance, and what will actually make a difference.

Do you prefer an undermount or above counter basin in the bathroom?

It’s great to save an inspiration image of a vanity you love, but it’s worth asking how that basin will actually work day to day.

An undermount basin creates a clean, seamless finish and makes it easy to wipe the benchtop straight into the sink. It’s a practical choice if you want a minimal look, or if you’d prefer the tapware, mirror or cabinetry to be the standout feature.
Keep in mind they do require careful planning within your cabinetry to allow for the basin to sit below the benchtop, as well as the plumbing down to the floor or back through the wall.

An above-counter basin can become more of a statement. There are some beautiful and unique options that add shape, detail and character to the vanity.
They can also be a great option when working with vintage dressers or feature vanities, as we’ve done in both and , where Abby’s love of character pieces helped shape the bathroom design.
Tapware and bench space may be elements that require more consideration with above-counter options and if you like to think about the cleaning side of things, they can add a little more time.

We each have our own reasons for selections and we like to ask the questions of our clients to ensure their vision also suits their lifestyle.
