If you've ever visited our office, chances are you've already met Jacko and Steph, our resident Labradors and self-appointed workplace supervisors.

Every morning starts the same way—making the rounds to say good morning to everyone and ensuring the team is ready for the day ahead. While they may not contribute much to production, they've never been late, never called in sick, and are always happy to see you.

When they're not greeting staff and visitors, you'll usually find them snoozing in front of the window, chasing each other around the office, or patiently waiting for one of their favourite times of day: lunchtime. Closely followed by knock-off, of course.

No matter what's happening in the workshop or office, Jacko and Steph are always in a good mood and ready to brighten someone's day. Even on the toughest days, they never fail to put a smile on our faces.

Some jobs call for a different approach.

For a challenging machining job, our team used 3D printing to create custom sacrificial workholding that allowed us to securely hold the component while completing the required machining.

It’s a great example of how we combine practical problem-solving with new technology to find effective solutions for complex jobs.

Larger parts require larger machining capability.

Our DN6700XL gives us a machining envelope of 2100mm in X, 670mm in Y and 625mm in Z, allowing us to take on larger CNC machined components in-house.

We invested in this machine to expand our capabilities and give our customers more options when it comes to manufacturing larger, precision-machined parts.

When original drawings are lost, replacing an ageing part can become a major challenge.

These components came from a food processing facility where the original designs were no longer available. During a scheduled shutdown, the Billroy team had a short window to measure the existing parts and recreate the entire assembly using drafting software.

The parts and completed drawings were then returned to the customer so production could recommence as planned.

Most importantly, they now have accurate drawings ready to manufacture replacement parts if they're ever needed, helping reduce the risk of extended downtime in the future.

That's the value of reverse engineering: we turn an existing part into a manufacturing solution for the future.

Recently, we partnered with Adam from 3D Tech to trial advanced 3D scanning on fabricated components for the mining sector. By overlaying a highly accurate 3D scan of the finished component with the original CAD model, we were able to benchmark fabrication accuracy and gain detailed insight into dimensional conformity.

The results were impressive and demonstrated the value that modern 3D scanning can bring to quality assurance and manufacturing. The trial also provided a great opportunity to better understand where this technology can add the most value within our production environment.

Since completing this project, 3D Tech has invested in even more advanced and efficient Metrology-grade scanning equipment, and we're excited to explore future applications with Adam and the team as the technology continues to evolve.

Continuous improvement is about embracing new ideas, evaluating emerging technologies, and finding better ways to deliver quality outcomes for our customers.
