Star of the South Project

Star of the South Project Star of the South is an up to 2.2 GW offshore wind energy project proposed off Victoria's Gippsland coast. The project is being developed by Southerly Ten.

Star of the South is Australia’s most advanced offshore wind project. At up to 2.2 GW, it could power 1.2 million homes with renewable electricity each year, create up to 6,000 Australian jobs, and help continue Gippsland's energy industry as its coal power stations retire. We respectfully acknowledge the Gunaikurnai people as the Traditional Owners of the land and waters where Star of the South i

s proposed, and pay respect to Elders past and present. About this page:

Gippsland offshore wind = less transmission, lower prices

A new study shows offshore wind in Gippsland will bring down power bills, reduce the need for more new transmission lines and cut fuel costs across the grid.

Here's what the future could look like with offshore wind in the mix:
⚡Over 900 km less transmission lines
⚡Around $150 off the average Victorian household power bill each year from 2040
⚡ Billions saved on fuel, infrastructure and land
⚡ Less reliance on expensive fuels to keep the lights on.

One of the big benefits of offshore wind is when it produces power - in the evening when demand is highest, and helping helping cover seasonal peaks in winter and summer.

👀 Taking a closer look at our shore crossing site 👀

Last week, members of our Community Advisory Group visited the land we recently purchased at Reeves Beach to learn about future plans for this site.

Our Head of Transmission and Lands, Will, explained how the land is expected to be used before, during and after construction.

Right now 👉 The land is leased by a local farmer for cattle grazing.

During construction 👉 A temporary construction area would be set up to host the shore crossing works - check out this video to see what's involved: https://youtu.be/h5mLySJjtqw

During operations 👉 The cables will all be underground and the land above can continue to be used as it is today.

💬 Interested in hearing from your local Community Advisory Group member about the visit or the project more broadly? Get in touch and we’ll connect you.

📢 Environmental assessment update

Last year we submitted Star of the South's environmental assessments to government. The next step is for them to be released for public review.

The assessments bring together years of scientific research, consultation and technical studies. They'll explain how the project will be built, operated and decommissioned, and how potential impacts will be managed.

When the documents are released, you’ll be able to:
📄 Read them online or view hard copies at Gippsland venues
💬 Speak with our team and ask questions
✍️ Make a submission to government decision-makers.

We’ll keep sharing updates as the review period gets closer. Stay tuned.

Thousands of people came to Paynesville last weekend for the first Gippsland Lakes Boat Show 👏🎣🛥

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the offshore wind stall to speak with us on Sunday. It was great to connect with boaters and fishers from Gippsland, across Victoria and beyond.

The event was an epic showcase of boats, demonstrations, stalls and activities. A few of our highlights were the seafood tastings and eyeing off the luxury boats! 👀😋

Shout out to Boating Industry Association of Victoria for bringing this awesome event to Gippsland.

Engineering fanatic? This one's for you! 👷💡

SBS On Demand is running a series called Engineering Tomorrow, and there's an entire episode dedicated to Offshore Wind.

It explores how offshore wind has evolved into one of the world’s most advanced energy technologies.

Experts unpack how these remarkable structures are designed, transported and installed at sea. It’s a fascinating look at the scale, precision and innovation behind modern offshore wind projects.

Congratulations to the Port Welshpool and District Bowling Club, with both teams making the Division 3 finals 👏🏆

We caught one of the finals in action - after a nail-biting draw it went down to a decider. They didn't take home the prize this time, but have a second shot this week to go into the grand final and join their club mates who made it straight through.

We're proud to support this club, whose volunteers contribute so much to local sport in Port Welshpool and maintain a wonderful facility right on the waterfront.

Offshore wind turbines are bigger and more powerful than their onshore cousins. This means they can generate more electricity from fewer turbines, harnessing strong and consistent ocean winds to supply sustainable and reliable power to the grid 💨⚡

Built to its full potential, Star of the South could power 1.2 million homes each year, for 30+ years.

Q: What happens to the turbines in extreme winds?

A: Offshore wind turbines are purpose-built to operate in strong seas and winds up to 110 km/h. In extreme weather, turbines can be paused to protect them from damage.

They undergo rigorous testing - check out how it's done here 👉 www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m-jwwM3qRs
