Revegetation monitoring seems simple enough. Put out some quadrats, count some plants and see how things are going.

But will your monitoring program actually detect the level of plant loss you're interested in?

Across a large revegetation site, things like sample size, quadrat size, variability and stratification can make a big difference to the answer. A little statistical thinking during survey design can give you more confidence in the results, and potentially save a lot of time in the field.

We received the email introducing the keynote speakers for the Australasian W**ds Conference 2026 and, well... we're a little disappointed.

While not technically a keynote speaker, they somehow forgot to mention TerraLab Director Harley Schinagl, who'll be presenting on Day 1 at 11:00 am in the Auditorium, immediately after the keynote sessions.

That's alright though. We've gone ahead and issued a correction.

Quick tip: Need to calculate planting density?

Using the STA web app, you can draw a polygon around your planting area, get the number of trees, and with some simple maths, work out your planting density.
No exporting. No GIS software. Just your browser and your existing STA data.

Bonus tip: Did you spray the w**ds around the trees to ensure they survived? Do the same thing and work out how many survivors you have.

Our data suggests the average w**d controller pulls the spray trigger around 220 times per day.

If it took just 10 seconds to stop, pull out your phone and record each spray event, that's over 36 minutes spent on data entry every day. For a crew of four working a five-day week, that's around 12 hours that could have been spent getting the job done.

The STA system automatically records every spray event, every movement and uploads the data when the device is charging. No stopping, no manual recording, no paperwork at the end of the day.

Less time on data entry. More time in the field.

Google has announced that Google Earth Pro for desktop will no longer be available for new downloads from June 2027.

The good news is that Google Earth isn't disappearing. The web version will continue to be developed and already includes many of the features people use every day, including support for KML and KMZ files.

For many users, the transition will be fairly straightforward. For others, this could be the perfect opportunity to explore other free mapping software or even step up to a full GIS platform.

The STA platform is about much more than collecting data in the field. Once it's uploaded, you can quickly drill into exactly what you're looking for.

This short walkthrough shows just a few of the filtering options available in the web app. Search by w**d species, project, team member, device, date and more to narrow thousands of records down in seconds. Whether you're checking field progress, reviewing data quality or analysing treatment history, having powerful filters makes finding the information you need fast and straightforward.

It's a simple feature that can save a lot of time.

One of the more interesting applications of eDNA isn't finding threatened species, but w**ds.

W**d surveillance can be costly. The use of drones has changed the landscape a bit, but they still have their practical limits in tall, dense forests, developed areas, or in poor weather.

Imagine taking water samples every few kilometres down a creek and using eDNA to list all the w**ds that appear in that part of the system. DNA moves downstream and there are still plenty of questions around how far plant DNA can travel and how detections should be interpreted so it's far from a perfect workflow. But as a screening tool for large waterways, it's a fascinating area of research and one that's developing quickly.

Upfront cost is only part of the equation when choosing field technology. While STA Loggers are priced competitively with generic GPS units, their automated workflows deliver far greater long-term value. By reducing manual processing, streamlining data handling, and improving reporting efficiency, teams save hours on every project. That productivity gain quickly outweighs the initial investment.

Most sports have highly standardised playing surfaces. An NBA court is the same everywhere. A tennis court is the same everywhere. But there are a few interesting exceptions where the field itself becomes part of the game. Baseball is probably the most famous example, and AFL is another.

No two AFL grounds are exactly the same shape or size, so we thought it would be interesting to actually map them properly using GIS. Using aerial imagery and local projected coordinate systems, we traced the true boundary lines of a selection of AFL grounds, then rotated and scaled them equally to compare their real shapes side by side. Some are longer, some are wider, and some are a lot rounder than you might expect.

Kardinia Park came out as the longest ground at 170 m, Carrara comes out a bit boxya, and the SCG just has some weird lumps and bumps around it. Adelaide Oval looks the closest to a perfect oval by our eye.

It’s obviously a bit of fun, but it’s also a nice reminder that GIS can be used to explore almost anything spatial. Environmental analysis, infrastructure, urban planning… or settling arguments about oddly shaped footy grounds.

“What has the space industry really given me?” I hear you ask.

What about the ability to write your name, with features from the earth! I know, right?

"Your Name in Landsat" is a simple (and oddly satisfying) tool that lets you type your name, and returns real satellite images from the Landsat program. Each letter formed by natural features, as seen from space. You can even hover over each letter to see where in the world it was captured.
