đĄ GPS vs GNSS: Whatâs the Difference?
Many people use the word GPS to describe all satellite positioning systems, but technically, GPS and GNSS are not exactly the same.

GPS means Global Positioning System.
It is a satellite navigation system developed and operated by the United States.

GNSS means Global Navigation Satellite Systems.
It is the broader term that includes all global satellite positioning systems, not only GPS.
In simple words:
đ GPS = one satellite navigation system
đ GNSS = all satellite navigation systems together
GNSS includes several constellations such as:

đˇđē GLONASS â Russia
đĒđē Galileo â European Union
đ¨đŗ BeiDou â China
So, when a receiver uses only GPS satellites, it depends on one system. But when it uses GNSS, it can access multiple satellite constellations, which often improves positioning availability, coverage, accuracy, and reliability.
