*Smart Irrigation System | IoT-based Real-World Application*
With the aim of making agriculture more effective and sustainable through modern technology, I recently implemented my Smart Irrigation System project at the real field level.
I ran this system for 7(22 March - 28March) consecutive days on our 5 katha paddy field and verified its effectiveness. The system automatically determines whether irrigation is needed by analyzing soil moisture (%) and water table (cm) in real-time.
-Field Experiment Insights:
• A total of 3 irrigations were required in 7 days
• The system signaled to start the pump after the water level decreased on average every 2.6 days
• We achieved about 94% accuracy with real data and land conditions
- Real-World Challenge:
Since the land is under the Barendra Irrigation Project, direct pump automation was not possible. Therefore, irrigation was controlled manually in coordination with the lineman according to the system signal—which is planned to be fully automated in the future.
- Power Limitation:
Even though the solar panel was used, it was not enough, so I had to change the battery periodically—this is an important focus of the next upgrade.
- Technologies & Components:
ESP32 | GSM (NEO-6) | Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor | Ultrasonic Sensor (Water Level) | DHT11 | Solar Panel | Battery | Relay Module
- Impact & Vision:
This project can be a time-saving, water-efficient and smart irrigation solution for farmers in the future. I am currently working on improving it—especially adding Remote Monitoring, Data Analytics and Mobile App Integration.
I look forward to your valuable feedback, suggestions and cooperation.
