🇧🇪 A few weeks ago, Boortmalt brought together six CEOs from leading Belgian breweries and Belgian farmers for an open discussion on the sustainable future of Belgian beer.

The session began with the EY Four Futures experience, which presented four climate scenarios illustrating how the world could look in 30 years, ranging from limited climate action to meaningful mitigation efforts. The experience was eye-opening for all of us and fed the discussions we had afterwards.

We concluded that Belgian brewers have the tools to mitigate climate change. A major topic we reflected on was the transition from conventionally farmed barley to regeneratively farmed barley. Farmers are ready to accelerate this shift, and the discussion highlighted that close collaboration and mutual trust are essential to building a strong foundation for sustainable Belgian beers.

Thank you to the Belgian brewers for their openness and willingness to embrace green solutions through collaboration and to EY for this immersive experience.

🇬🇧 🌾  Boortmalt attended the AB InBev event at Rougham Estate near Bury St Edmunds.

Our Master of Malt, Oliver Rubinstein, delivered an insightful presentation on the importance of soil health, both in preserving moisture during drought and in reducing soil and nutrient runoff during heavy rainfall. He also demonstrated in the field how regenerative farming practices enable soils to retain water for extended periods, supporting the growth of our spring barley.

A convivial lunch provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views on sustainability with some of our team members, fellow maltsters, local politicians, government representatives and farmers.

Many thanks to the farmers, AB InBev and all partners who contributed to this successful event!

🍺🇪🇺 Boortmalt received the European Parliament Beer Group’s Grain to Glass for a visit to our Strasbourg Plant.

This visit formed part of a broader programme bringing together policymakers and representatives from across the brewing and malting sectors to explore key topics such as beer, agriculture, innovation, climate resilience, and Europe’s competitiveness.

At Boortmalt, we value these exchanges, which help connect EU policymakers with the realities of Europe’s farmers, maltsters and brewers

A special thank you to Peter Langie, Amaury Sporen, and our local team from Strasbourg for helping to highlight the central role of malt in Europe’s brewing sector.

🇪🇸 Our Spanish teams visited Buenavista Farm in Valladolid with the Agricultura Regenerativa, hosted by Félix del Villar.

🌱 In total, the Asociación de Agricultura Regenerativa has trained more than 25,000 people in regenerative agriculture since 2010. This initiative aligns with Boortmalt’s ambition to support Spanish farmers in their transition towards regenerative practices.

👩🏻‍🌾👨🏽‍🌾 During the visit, we discussed current challenges and the long‑term commitment of farmers working to protect soil health. To support clarity and avoid greenwashing, CREAF and the Asociación de Agricultura Regenerativa have defined 10 guiding principles, including water care, biodiversity, no‑tillage, crop rotation, reduced chemical inputs (excluding GMOs and gene‑edited crops), and stronger territorial links. In total, over 130 farms are following these criteria across Spain.

Thank you again to our hosts for this visit!

Our team had the pleasure of attending

One clear takeaway: the strong and continued rise of the healthy snacking trend 💪

📈Across the industry, we see growing demand for products that are high in fibre and protein, with reduced salt, improved digestibility, and increasingly cleaner, more natural ingredient lists.

👉 These developments fully confirm the strategic direction of Boortmalt in providing more natural and functional food ingredient solutions. They also reinforce the positioning of Maltchies, our malt-based snack brand, developed in line with these consumer expectations.

🤝 We also met several familiar faces from our brewing industry, including Lallemand Brewing, who are also exploring similar opportunities in food applications.

Overall, SNACKEX confirmed that malt-based ingredients have a strong role to play in the future of healthier snacking, and we are excited about what comes next!

Boortmalt & officially sign their partnership ✅ ✍️

Yesterday in Issoudun, Giovanni Vercammen (Chief Energy & Technology Officer and Managing Director at Boortmalt) and Pierre de Montlivault (Regional Director, Dalkia Centre-West) signed the agreement marking the launch of Boortmalt’s new biomass project.

👉 The Issoudun malting plant has always been at the forefront of decarbonisation. In the 2000s, it built a cogeneration unit, then installed its first biomass unit in 2013. More recently, in 2021, the site commissioned one of Europe’s largest solar thermal plants. Thanks to these successive investments, the heat usage at the Issoudun malting plant has a 50% decarbonisation potential.

☁️ ⬇️ This new biomass unit marks a significant step in our Issoudun strategy to reduce CO₂ emissions per tonne of malt produced by 85% by 2030. At the group level, Boortmalt is targeting a 42% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035.

Dalkia’s expertise, particularly in delivering a constant and reliable heat supply, has been a key factor in the success of this project. That is why we would like to once again thank Dalkia for their valuable support in the creation of this biomass unit. Many thanks as well to our Group Energy and Issoudun teams for their investment and dedication to this project.

The distilling commercial and innovation teams attended the in Edinburgh from 5th to 7th May 🥃

David Cooke and Andy Foulkes had the opportunity to present our latest innovation to the distilling community: the Ion Smoke.

Developed in conjunction with EBSmoke and our team in Glenesk, this technology cuts peat consumption by up to 40% while preserving the authentic flavour profile of peated whisky. From tradition to transformation: this innovation safeguards peated malt’s heritage and peat stewardship.

Peatlands are among the planet’s most precious natural resources. They take thousands of years to deposit, and Scotland’s natural flora and fauna owe much to the presence of these peat bogs. Peat acts as a critical carbon sink and is one of the most high-profile environmental targets from the Scotch Whisky Association. This long-term project, in conjunction with The Scotch Whisky Research Institute (SWRI) reinforces our expertise in the distilling market.

🌾 🇬🇧 Boortmalt partners with to advance the future of sustainable British barley farming.

Boortmalt is launching a new collaboration with Asahi UK to support the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices on British barley farms.

This collaboration aims to lower GHG emissions from barley, as part of Boortmalt and Asahi UK’s ongoing work to reduce their environmental impacts.

Participating farms will introduce regenerative practices, which can enhance soil fertility and structure, leading to better crop yields and water conservation, and help boost biodiversity on farms.

The programme is delivered via and , who will carry out the measurement, reporting and verification of emissions reductions. This programme is also designed to align with the SAI Regenerating Together Framework.
