Males of the golden-collared manakin (Manacus vitellinus) have an elaborate courtship display that includes a series of acrobatic jumps within a court delimited by small saplings. This video was recorded by Judith Janisch (.janisch), who with other members of the RCN, have recently published a study in which they show that male manakins modify their courtship after alteration of the court. They provide evidence for the involvement of motor learning in this species. You can read the complete article here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003347220301615

The Araripe Manakin (Antilophia bokermanni) is endemic to xeric shrublands in Brazil. In a study published today (link below), Milene G. Gaiotti and other researchers of the RCN found that this species has an atypical mating behavior relative to other manakins. They report that males do not aggregate in display arenas (leks), but instead defend territories where breeding females nest. All these pictures were taken by Milene in Crato, Ceará State, Brazil: 1) A male that was banded and singing during the breeding season; 2) Chicks begging for food, the female was nearby when the picture was taken; and 3) A female sitting on the nest.

We just finished the fourth meeting of the Manakin Genomics RCN, in the Brazilian Atlantic forest, where Swallow-tailed or Blue manakins (Chiroxiphia caudata) live. Blue manakins perform outstanding cooperative displays of two or more males. These pictures were taken by Ben Vernasco at the Reserva Natural Salto Morato.

This is a nest of the White-bearded manakin (Manacus manacus). It was found in the south coast of São Paulo state (Brazil), where Cesar Cestari, Marco Aurelio Pizo and Bette Loiselle conducted some studies on the species' natural history. The female was taking care of her two nestlings. Manakin females have to build nests, incubate and take care of nestlings alone. Meanwhile adult males practice wonderful display maneuvres on specific arenas on the ground. The photo was taken by Ilson do Prado.

The White-throated manakin (Corapipo gutturalis) is distributed in the Guianas, Suriname, Venezuela and in part of the Amazon of Brazil. This species performs displays on fallen logs in the forest, these logs need to be covered by a green carpet of moss (second picture). These photographs were taken by Mariana Tolentino in "Reserva do Km 41" PDBFF, Amazonas, Brazil. Today in the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we want to celebrate all these amazing women. Women are the core and power of this research coordination network; they work everyday to make a difference and move science forward. We thank them and celebrate their achievements.
The goal of the network is to address evolutionary implications of sexual selection from the level of the genome to the ecosystem, using Manakins (family of birds found in tropical forests) as a model clade.
