Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) was privileged to participate in the University of Botswana Alumni Symposium panel discussion on โ€œClosing the Delivery Gapโ€, moderated by MCM Citizen Economic Empowerment Programme (CEEP) Coordinator, Ms. Tirelo Ramasedi.

The discussion brought together distinguished alumni and thought leaders to examine one of the most critical challenges facing institutions and economies globally: translating strategy, policy and vision into tangible outcomes that improve lives and create sustainable value.

A key takeaway from the symposium was the opportunity to leverage the University of Botswana alumni network as a national think tank for implementation. With alumni serving across leadership positions in government, business, academia and civil society, the network possesses the expertise, experience and influence required to support Botswana in bridging the gap between planning and ex*****on.

The panel underscored that sustainable development is not only dependent on the quality of ideas and policies, but also on the strength of implementation systems, accountability mechanisms, collaboration and innovation.

MCM remains committed to fostering dialogue and partnerships that contribute to economic diversification, citizen empowerment and the achievement of Botswanaโ€™s long-term development aspirations.

From vision to action. From strategy to delivery. From ambition to impact.

Morupule Coal Mine was honoured to be part of the 3rd Annual QuARM Anniversary Gala, where our Corporate Affairs Manager, Louis Baseki, delivered a thought-provoking keynote address centered on leadership, professional growth, and purpose.

Drawing from his personal journey, Louis reflected on the experiences, challenges, and lessons that have shaped his career. He encouraged attendees to embrace continuous learning, build strong personal and professional reputations, invest in effective communication skills, and remain anchored to purpose as they pursue their goals.

He also shared insights on the importance of resilience, navigating complexity, and creating meaningful impact within organisations and communities. His message challenged young professionals to think beyond their immediate circumstances, lead with intention, and strive for excellence in everything they do.

We extend our sincere appreciation to QuARM for the invitation and for creating a platform that celebrates achievement, inspires growth, and brings together professionals committed to making a positive difference.

Theme:

Today, as we commemorate World Environment Day 2026, we are reminded that the environment is not a resource borrowed from the future; it is the foundation of our lives, our communities, and our operations. This yearโ€™s theme, NowForClimate, reinforces the urgency for immediate and sustained action. Climate change is no longer a distant concern. Its impact is already evident through rising temperatures, extreme weather events, water stress, and biodiversity loss.

At Morupule Coal Mine (MCM), we acknowledge our responsibility to act decisively and align our operations with global climate goals. In line with our Climate Change Position Statement, we are committed to a clear decarbonisation pathway, including reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 35% in 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. These targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement ambition to limit global warming to 1.5ยฐC and are being guided by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), while we also collaborate across our value chain to address Scope 3 emissions. We are also committed to transparency by aligning our disclosures with recognised frameworks such as the GHG Protocol and GRI Standards, while working with stakeholders and industry partners to advance practical climate solutions.

No action is too small. Our daily choices to reduce energy use, prevent emissions, and improve resource efficiency help us achieve our climate targets and strengthen MCMโ€™s ESG performance.

This World Environment Day, let us renew our commitment to climate action, sustainability, and continual improvement.

This week, Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) officially launched its Annual Litter Picking Campaign, a practical demonstration of our continued commitment to environmental stewardship, operational discipline, and maintaining a clean, safe, and sustainable workplace.

The initiative is aligned with Botswanaโ€™s National Clean-Up Campaign and the Presidential call by His Excellency President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko for all citizens and institutions to take greater responsibility in protecting and preserving the environment.

The launch activities commenced at the A14 gate, where employees and contractors came together for litter picking activities along the A14 corridor and the main mine access roads before proceeding to various designated operational areas across the mine for continued clean-up efforts and housekeeping activities.

Following the clean-up activities, employees gathered for a Safety Stand Down session led by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Edwin Elias and the Head of Safety & Sustainability, Ms Patricia Nkuna. The session reflected on the Mineโ€™s operational performance, achievements, safety milestones, and the importance of maintaining a strong safety culture across all operations.

In reinforcing the message of collective responsibility, employees were reminded that environmental responsibility begins with the small everyday actions taken by each individual and that together, we can build a lasting culture of cleanliness and accountability across the mine and surrounding communities.

This initiative will also extend beyond MCM into Palapye, where future clean-up activities will support broader community environmental awareness and cleanliness efforts.
