The Government has reached a major energy milestone with the groundbreaking and Power Purchase Agreement signing for the 500MW Maun Solar PV Plant and 500MWh battery storage.

President Duma Boko said the project marks the nation’s shift from planning to ex*****on, aiming to boost energy security and sustainability.

Developed via a Government-to-Government partnership with Oman, the plant will supply clean power to the national grid, supported by storage for peak demand.
The government is targeting 50% renewable energy by 2030 (up from 8%), as President Boko declared that Botswana aspires to become a regional energy hub.

The 30-year Independent Power Producer project will reduce carbon emissions, cut import reliance, attract investment, and enable citizen participation in the green economy.

Increased heat of hydration in mass concrete using modern cements cause a challenge due to their increased Fineness. The high concrete curing temperatures impede the normal formation of Ettringites.

Crash Course Presenter Bio

Jermy Kampalo is a Civil Engineer with over 20 years of experience specializing in the construction and supervision of large-scale infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and dams. A graduate of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS)—formerly University of Malawi, The Polytechnic. Mr. Kampalo has built a career anchored in comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) processes.

After establishing a strong technical foundation working with major contractors including Grinaker-LTA, he transitioned into consultancy in 2008, where he has worked with three reputable Consulting Firms including presently at CPP Botswana (Pty) Ltd. This dual involvement has allowed him to bridge the gap between practical site ex*****on and high-level oversight, ensuring that complex engineering projects meet the highest standards of safety and durability.

Mr Kampalo area of expertise includes formulation of mix designs (Concrete, Asphalt including soil stabilisation mix designs), Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Management and Supervision.

Mr Kampalo co-authored a Paper on: Precautionary Measures against Delayed Ettringite Formation in Mass Concrete - Kazungula Bridge, presented at SANCOLD 2022 ANNUAL CONFERENCE in Johannesburg and currently, he is working on a Paper on “QA/QC Processes for Optimal Performance of Kalahari Sands as Construction Material”

We are excited to invite you to our next ACEB Future Leaders Crash Course titled “Concrete Durability Risks and Corrective Measures from Internal Suphatic Reaction and Alkali Aggregate Reaction (AAR): Case Study - Lotsane Dam and Kazungula Bridge,” designed to equip young engineers with practical insights into concrete durability challenges, failure mechanisms, and effective mitigation strategies in major infrastructure projects.
