Wajax customers Kropp Contracting and SK Trucking, based in Slave Lake, Alberta, recently toured Tigercat Industries’ assembly plants in Ontario. Though two separate companies owned by the Kropp family, they share one strong legacy—three generations dedicated to the logging industry.

Dennis, Shane, and Seth Kropp were highly impressed with their visit. “It’s amazing,” said Dennis Kropp, owner of Kropp Contracting. “I was here four years ago, and four years before that. We took a look at the 850s and was interesting to see the updates they've made. They make so many updates on everything. What they’re building here is very impressive.”

This article explores public and private sector perspectives on the future of the biochar economy in North Carolina.

Charlotte-based soil and water conservation thought leader Barbara Bleiweis sees biochar as a unifying solution to challenges such as flood mitigation, water quality, farmland degradation, and storm debris management. She envisions a circular biochar economy supported by public-private partnerships.

The local economy in western North Carolina took a double hit. The shuttering of a major paper mill was followed by significant flooding, erosion and forest damage caused by Hurricane Helene. Blair Sheppard and partner Sam Burnette launched Heritage Tree Recycling to revitalize western North Carolina’s devastated forest products industry and help repair the storm damage.

By converting storm debris and low-grade wood into biochar, the model creates new revenue streams, restores local jobs, and improves economic resilience. The many downstream uses of biochar — along with the added benefit of long-term carbon sequestration — strengthen the case. Together, these perspectives highlight a scalable, resilient alternative to traditional debris processing methods that benefit communities and ecosystems.
