Alec Williams Construction

Alec Williams Construction I’m Alec, a home builder & renovator focused on helping people create their dream homes in Calgary, Alberta. He wanted to take a different path.

Alec Williams followed his passion more than 20 years ago when he set out to create a unique construction business. His goal: to build enduring and beautiful homes for clients. However, he knew that dreams could be shattered by surprise budgets, non-existent communication with clients and shoddy building practices. One that started with superior communication, service and construction expertise. O

ver the years, Alec never wavered on these commitments. Instead he added to his client promise: he took the construction practice beyond the ordinary, making a pledge to build homes that become an oasis, a comforting retreat for family and friends to gather in and enjoy. This pledge underscores the critical need that many homebuilders too often forget: the need to marry form and function, beauty and strength. Of course every builder promises a beautiful end result. But Alec works off the premise that beauty must be more than skin deep. It starts with the solid build that ensures corners are square, floors are level and millwork is exacting; it extends to comfortable, well-planned spaces; and in the end the final product is a work of art. New year. New look.
Calgarians have embraced home renovations and new home builds over the last year, and it looks like 2022 will continue to set records. Thanks to the pandemic, many homeowners are re-evaluating their relationships with their homes.
Before March 2020, your home may have merely been a place to sleep. But now, home has taken on an entirely new meaning. A two-year lockdown and various restrictions have forced millions of people around the world to adapt to their spaces and exist within the confines of four walls.
As we move into this new year, more homeowners than ever are saying it’s time for something new, something that functions better and feels fresh. We love the freedom that working from home has given us, but we can’t stand that our dining rooms have been transformed into offices. We love being closer to our families, but we crave some separate spaces to escape to for alone time.
That said, COVID has been stressful, and I field calls regularly from potential clients that are worried about embarking on a big project right now.
As the lead at Alec Williams Construction, my goal is to ensure a client’s home building journey is as beautiful as the end result. We believe in delivering a stress-free experience built on open communication, careful time and budget tracking, and an empathy and respect for the upheaval a big life project can cause.
If you’re thinking about renovating or building a new home in 2022, please reach out.

PS. We recently took some time to freshen up our look. Please head over to check out our new website - we'll drop a link in the comments - or send us an email if you'd like a copy of our 2022 Look Book.

In these tumultuous times, aging in place is more appealing than ever before. Seniors are struggling with the idea of moving into assisted-living or nursing homes. The longer we live with the pandemic, the more we learn about dangers of viruses spreading like wildfire in these centres and how isolated residents feel during periods of quarantine.

Bungalows provide the perfect opportunity for people to transition into new life chapters – easily, safely, and independently. A luxury bungalow is ideal for those looking for a larger one- floor footprint. These homes allow for big, open-concept spaces and seamless flow between living areas, bedrooms and outdoor rooms. When built or renovated with aging at home in mind, bungalows accommodate game changing supports – room for walkers and wheelchairs, curbless showers, easy to reach cabinets and even caregiver accommodations.

These dream homes also allow empty nesters to live life to the fullest, entertaining their families as they age in place and within their current community of friends and neighbours.

Building the perfect bungalow or doing the renovations can be stressful. However at Alec Williams Construction, we are in the business of ensuring your home is your oasis. We’ll be with you every step of the way – whether you choose to build or renovate.

We work through the process of what your home needs are, planning, and executing your ideal space. I believe homeowners are the heart of the home and need to play a big role in design and decision-making. Our philosophy is simple. “You Dream. We listen.”

We make sure that timelines are adhered to, budgets are set, client needs are met, and finetune the project to meet your dreams of finding a sanctuary that supports you now and in the future.

We want to help you create a deluxe space that can be your forever home, allowing you to age gracefully in place for years and decades to come.

If you think bungalow life is right for you, feel free to book a complimentary consultation to discuss your requirements. Whether you are looking for a building lot, an existing bungalow to buy and renovate, or renovations to your current home, we are here to help at every stage of the journey to your forever home.

Please feel free to reach out any time with your questions. We’re here to help you create the home of your dreams. Visit www.AlecWilliamsConstruction.ca to set up a complimentary call to discuss your needs!

A recently built bungalow beauty on a quiet street in North Glenmore Park is a testament to Alec Williams’ personal vision. Alec jumped at the opportunity to purchase the North Glenmore lot as he felt it was perfectly sized for a luxury bungalow. An ode to prairie modernism, this stunning home with 12-foot ceilings was just what Calgary buyers were looking for, selling within days of listing and well over the list price.

Today’s homebuyers know that a bungalow supports aging in place, allows for big open concept spaces, and larger one-floor footprints so bedrooms, living spaces and outdoor rooms can flow seamlessly.

I find that December is a month where everyone starts dreaming of changes they’d like to make to their home during the cold, dark Alberta winter, and those dreams aren’t necessarily reality based.

Every home renovation is tough, relationship testing and filled with unique surprises, so I always warn clients to expect the unexpected especially when investing in an older home.

To help keep those dreams alive, I’ve prepared a list of how to prepare for those unexpected surprises while planning your perfect home renovation.

1. Hire one person to manage your home renovation.
It’s easy to spend a lot of money on architects, interior designers, trades and sub trades without those dollars advancing your project in a cohesive direction. Ensure you have one main person who is fully accountable for your home renovation.

2. Build in a contingency plan in case extra funds are required.
It’s hard to anticipate every issue that could arise or to estimate precisely for every tile, faucet, or toilet. No matter your budget, be sure to have reserve funds in case you either need to fix a safety issue or want to spend a little extra on tile work, appliances or even some little luxuries (see point 5 below).

3. You won’t always meet your deadline.
Timetables are hindered by indecisiveness, products not being in stock, the weather, and those unanticipated surprises that come along. It’s important to track what’s happening and update the timeline regularly so you are always up to speed and not disappointed or caught off guard by delays.

4. Ensure everything is in writing.
A quality contractor will be documenting everything as well and relaying that information consistently after meetings and discussions. Make sure to review and provide feedback, clarify and sign off on the communication. It may be necessary for you to document all discussions with your contractor, suppliers, or tradesmen with an email outlining decisions made. This keeps the project tracked and ensures you have a record of exactly what you’ve asked for.

5. Don’t forget some little luxuries that will make you smile everyday.
Whether it’s a built in coffee machine for the perfect morning latte, a steam shower for those cold winter nights, or a grand wood-burning fireplace to gather family around for the holidays, think of adding a simple extravagance that you will enjoy for years to come. Too often, renovations are based on function and clients are sorry they missed an opportunity to do something a bit special along the way.

At Alec Williams Construction, we’re in the business of making sure your renovations go smoothly and exceed your expectations. If you’re at a loss as to where to start or want more guidance getting ready, we’re here to help.

To start, you can book a complimentary home health checkup with me to discuss the health of your existing home and your renovation requirements. For more details, feel free to phone me directly at 403.390.7708. You can also find out more on my website www.AlecWilliamsConstruction.ca.

Sharing one of our most loved blogs about making our homes the perfect gathering place during the holidays!

There truly is no place like home for the holidays. While it’s cold outside and the snow is falling, inside we’re toasty warm with fires crackling, cookies baking and memories being shared.

Winter’s here, and while Mother Nature has been easy on us so far, we know it’s not long before we settle in for a long and cold winter’s nap. Alberta’s potential extremes mean our houses have to be ready for those cold temperatures and big snow falls.

Check your roofing

Before the snow settles in, it’s a good idea to inspect your roof for damage that may have been caused by hail and wind over the summer months. You don’t want to risk leaks into your attic over winter and end up with a nasty surprise come spring.

Trim your trees

If you have evergreen trees on your property like Spruce or Pine, now’s the time to give them a trim, or call an expert if you have large trees. Annual check ups keep trees healthy and prevent dead or dying branches from snapping under the weight of snow build up.

Dig into your gutters

Unclogging your gutters and checking downspouts will ensure water can drain away from your home. This means less opportunity for freeze-thaw cycles to mess with your foundation and taking precautions will also prevent damage to your gutters and roof during the winter.

Service the furnace

While our furnaces tend to sleep through the summer, they don’t get much rest all winter long and no one likes the inconvenience and hazards of a minus 30 degree furnace outage, not to mention the extra costs involved. Book an appointment with a service expert, and if you’ve got an old furnace, maybe this year is the time to get it upgraded to something more efficient.

Shut off exterior hose bibs

It is essential that you disconnect hoses from the exterior hose bibs and shut the supply of water off inside the house even if you have frost-free hose bibs just to be safe. Once you have disconnected the hoses and shut the water off inside, it is important to open the taps outside to drain any water that may be there in the lines and then shut the taps off once again.

Sweep your chimney

There’s nothing better than a warm fire on a cold winter day. But it’s important to ensure both wood burning and gas fireplaces are safe to start up each winter. Creosote can build up in chimneys above wood-burning fires and if enough accumulates it can start a dangerous chimney fire. Gas fireplaces can become clogged with bird and animal nests or other debris that can cause dangerous conditions.

At Alec Williams Construction, we’re in the business of making sure your home is healthy. If you’re at a loss as to where to start or want more guidance getting winter ready, we’re here to help.

You can book a complimentary home health checkup with me. For more details, feel free to phone me directly at 403.390.7708 or visit my website. Act quickly, we have a few more openings before Christmas!
