Heading out on the water this season? As you enjoy spring and look ahead to summer, please keep safety top of mind around rivers and lakes, especially near hydro dams and generating stations. Cold water and sudden changes in current, depth, or temperature can create hazardous conditions.

Before you head out, remember to:

- Check weather and water conditions before you go and use only approved access points for swimming or boating.
- Stay in designated areas, follow posted signs and never cross barriers or fences.
- Watch for strong currents, slippery shorelines and sudden drop-offs, as conditions can change quickly.
- For your safety, keep a safe distance from all dams and generating stations.

These facilities help power our communities, but water conditions nearby can change quickly, especially in spring when runoff and operations can affect flow and water levels.

We are incredibly proud to recognize our Bow Valley Hydro team, whose outstanding performance earned them this year’s Safety Excellence Award at the TransAlta President’s Awards.

Hydro work goes far beyond maintaining infrastructure. It involves live systems, constant judgment calls, and, in many cases, no instruction manual. Many of our Bow Valley hydro sites have been operating for more than a century, yet they continue to safely power communities today. This work requires integrating historic mechanical systems with modern technology, all while operating in the Rockies where teams must plan for changing conditions, weather and even wildlife.

Throughout a demanding year, the team maintained a perfect safety record by leading with collaboration, open communication and a strong culture of psychological safety. People looked out for one another, spoke up when it mattered and worked closely with leaders who listened. Their achievement is a powerful reminder that safety excellence isn’t just about processes—it is built on trust, accountability and teamwork.

On April 28, Canada observes the National Day of Mourning, a time to remember those who have been injured, fallen ill or lost their lives in the workplace. Similar days of remembrance are observed in many parts of the world, including the United States and Australia, aligning with a shared responsibility across our global operations to ensure every worker gets home safely.

At TransAlta, we have a saying: safe production is the only production. We are committed to learning every day from our work and strengthening the systems that help keep people safe.

Today, we join the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety - CCOHS in pausing to reflect on the human impact behind every safety statistic.

On , we’re recognizing the importance of strong environmental leadership in protecting the ecosystems where we operate.

Throughout his career, Ken Munch, a Senior Environmental Specialist at TransAlta, has demonstrated exceptional commitment to environmental stewardship. Over the past year, Ken led multiple fish rescue efforts across our hydro operations, including a major initiative on the Spray Canal system, where approximately 7,800 fish from eight species were safely relocated ahead of construction. His approach emphasizes collaboration and education, fostering a shared responsibility for environmental protection.

We’re proud to highlight the expertise, care and commitment our people bring to advancing sustainability across our operations.

Last month, we welcomed the Consulate General of Ireland, Vancouver to one of our hydro facilities as part of Minister Timmy Dooley’s program in Western Canada.

During the visit, the delegation toured our historic Ghost Lake Hydro Plant, one of four TransAlta hydro plants along the Bow River.

Operating since 1929, the facility continues to play a vital role in water management and flood control across southern Alberta while delivering reliable, renewable power.

Many Calgarians may remember the Open Minds program offered in elementary schools across the city in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, TransAlta is thrilled to sponsor the evolution of this program, Campus Calgary / Open Minds at Contemporary Calgary, an immersive, arts-based learning experience developed with the Calgary Board of Education.

Recently, we dropped in on a group of students from Buffalo Rubbing Stone School. Over the course of a week, students explored Contemporary Calgary’s exhibitions and learning spaces while engaging with a central question: How does art help us understand the world, ourselves and each other?

Thank you to the students for welcoming us in and allowing us to see the program in action!
