Typical testing is done in a heated chamber with uniform heat. We tested it the way real parts actually experience heat: uneven heating.

Using a heat gun to create different temperature zones, resulting in uneven thermal stresses and expansion. This is a true torture test of PLA 💪

For this 3mm thick panel, how hot do you think it can go while maintaining dimensionsal accuracy?

Is Printed ABS really that much tougher than PLA? The short answer: Yes. The long answer: Yes, but there is more to it ⬇️

ABS is significantly more challenging to print, being far more sensitive to bed conditions, nozzle temperature, ambient temperature, and moisture content. This is why it is always recommended to print it with an enclosure. As a result, artifacts, defects, and unideal layer to layer adhesion can reduce the actual strength of printed ABS components significantly compared to the theoretically possible strength. This is especially true where those defects are in areas of stress concentration. What makes it more challenging is that those defects may not always be visible (on the surface).

On the other hand, PLA is significantly stronger than ABS, but it is more rigid and brittle, making it a less preferred choice for end-use parts that may experience impact or vibrations.
