Edmonton homes get dry once the furnace is running full time. Cold outdoor air holds very little moisture, and once it warms up inside, indoor humidity can drop well below 30 percent. You notice it as static shocks, dry skin, and hardwood floors that start to show gaps.
A whole-home humidifier mounts on your furnace and adds moisture to the air as it moves through your ductwork. It runs automatically and covers the whole house, so there are no portable units to refill in every bedroom.
If you already have one, now is a good time to check it. The water panel should be replaced every heating season, and the water supply and drain should be clear. A humidifier that hasn't been serviced in years often isn't doing much at all.
One thing many people don't know: more humidity is not always better in an Alberta winter. When it drops to -20 or colder, humidity set too high shows up as frost and condensation on the inside of your windows. The right setting changes with the outdoor temperature, and many newer controls adjust for that automatically.
If your furnace is getting older and you're thinking about an upgrade, it makes sense to add a humidifier at the same time since the work overlaps.
