When the past installation doesn't quite line up with the future

Upgrading an existing range exhaust from 4" to 6" can be more involved than simply changing the connection size. In this case, the existing 4" duct connection was not aligned with the new 6" range hood outlet, requiring the ductwork to be modified to make everything work properly.

Removed the existing 4" connection and reworked the duct transition to accommodate the new 6" round outlet.
Modified the existing ductwork to correct the alignment between the range hood and the existing exhaust route.
Installed and sealed the new connection to provide a properly sized, continuous exhaust path.

Good Food, Good Company, and a Lot to Be Thankful For.

This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for the boys at Phat Bastard Eats. Always friendly, always up for a great conversation, and consistently serving up some seriously amazing food.

The burgers are so, so tasty, and this is genuinely my soul food. Whether it's a beautiful sunny day or a dreary, miserable one, these guys always deliver a much-needed pick-me-up. Great food and great company are hard to beat.

Bathroom Exhaust Fan Installation

This bathroom had an existing exhaust fan that had previously been venting directly into the attic instead of exhausting to the exterior. Over time, the moisture being discharged into the attic contributed to significant damage and costly repairs for the homeowner.

- Installed a new bathroom exhaust fan and grille.
- Installed new 6" insulated ductwork through the attic and properly terminated it at the exterior of the home.
- Sealed and secured the new ductwork and exterior wall cap to provide a proper path for moisture to leave the home.

When you absolutely have to move 2,200 CFM of air unobstructed!!

When you're moving this much air, the airflow path matters. This compressor room required a high-volume ventilation solution designed to move a substantial amount of air while minimizing restriction.

Installed a high-volume ventilation fan designed to move approximately 2,200 CFM.
Installed a large-area return grille to provide a low-restriction path for incoming air.
Completed the installation to improve air movement through the compressor room and help manage heat generated during operation.

Sometimes you just need a little more breathing room.

When you need to move a serious volume of air, an 8" grille probably isn't going to cut it.

Sometimes the solution isn't complicated. You just need to give the air somewhere to go.

A kitchen renovation completed with a properly installed exterior range exhaust system.

During this kitchen renovation, the new range hood location had no existing exterior ventilation in place. Without a properly installed exhaust system, cooking moisture, grease, smoke, and odours remain trapped inside the home.

We installed the new kitchen range exhaust hood, then fabricated and installed a properly sized round metal duct system routed through the attic space to the exterior.

The exhaust duct was fully insulated throughout the attic space in accordance with BC Building Code requirements to help prevent condensation and moisture issues.

A range hood is only as effective as the ductwork connected to it. Proper sizing, routing, and installation are critical for removing contaminants from your home and improving indoor air quality.

Sometimes the biggest problems are the ones you can't see.

We were called to inspect this home for the installation of a new kitchen range exhaust. While in the attic, we discovered that the bathroom exhaust duct had become disconnected.

Instead of exhausting moisture outdoors, the bathroom fan had been blowing warm, humid air directly into the attic. Over time, that moisture had resulted in mould growth on the underside of the roof sheathing.

To correct the issue, we reran the insulated exhaust duct, properly secured it, and ensured the bathroom fan now exhausts outdoors as intended.

This is a good reminder that not all attic moisture problems are caused by roof leaks. A disconnected or improperly installed bathroom exhaust duct can introduce significant amounts of moisture into an attic, leading to mould, wood deterioration, and reduced insulation performance.

If your bathroom fan has never been inspected, or you've noticed condensation, musty odours, or signs of moisture in your attic, it may be worth having the ventilation system checked.

At Simply Sheet Metal, we don't just install ventilation systems. We inspect them to make sure they're doing their job properly.

Sometimes the equipment isn't the real problem.

This project came to us after the heat pump compressor had failed and the homeowner was dealing with a system that was extremely noisy. After inspecting the installation, it became clear that the ductwork layout was one of the worst I have seen. The air handler was installed backwards, the main duct system was poorly laid out, and the entire system was working much harder than it needed to.

Our solution included:
• Removing the existing main duct system.
• Installing a properly sized return air grille.
• Rotating the air handler into a more efficient orientation.
• Fabricating and installing new supply and return duct trunks.

The difference was immediate. The system is now quiet, airflow is significantly improved, and the new heat pump can operate the way it was designed to.

This project is a great reminder that HVAC performance is about much more than the equipment itself. A well-designed duct system is the foundation of an efficient, quiet, and reliable heating and cooling system.
