SPRING TIME IS SPRUCE UP TIME!!
What's prettier than Spring cherry blossoms? A beautiful new Sundeck in your backyard to view them from. It's that time of year when you love to enjoy a relaxing coffee moment or a brew & BBQ with family & friends on that new deck, of course. You too can have that maintenance free sundeck you always wanted. Vandercraft will remove & dispose of your old deck and construct a solid pressure treated framework for the composite decking on top. We highly recommend this type of decking, which comes in all sorts of colors, over pressure treated decking which still needs maintenance over time.
Check out these photos and let Vandercraft get you "All Decked Out".

HAPPY "SPRING BREAK" MONDAY TO ALL!
Whether we're young, raising a family, or elderly - we all value protection. While we all want to "feel" protected one way or another -"protection" in the Construction Industry is all about safety and damage. Today we'll concentrate on the second kind of protection, namely damage. This is ultimately the first concern in the Renovation world. Having experienced or carried out a home renovation you will have to agree that properly covering the existing floor, furniture or kitchen countertops (if needed), is an absolute must.
We here at Vandercraft also take this approach seriously. What only takes a couple of hours to execute will save you much grief if damage takes place and you weren't prepared. Attached are some examples of the care we take when we start every new project. When Vandercraft is at your house you can feel protected. We treat your house, well?...like your house. Rest assured, we got you covered.

HAPPY DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!!
Yes, once the rains have stopped and the sun has returned it's time to get outside with those garden tools and paint brushes. Getting that lawn and those gardens in shape and maybe a fresh coat of paint on the house trim. The bigger project would be to repaint or replace older wood siding. Upon close inspection you might notice that your wood siding has cracked, splintered or cupped. The attached photos identify this problem and how to properly fix it. If the existing siding is beyond repair then the following is recommended; The best and "up to code" approach is that after the siding is removed and the exterior walls have been gift wrapped with *TYVEK or similar wall membrane a rain screen is installed which creates an air cavity behind the siding for any moisture buildup or sweating to travel and drain. The airflow behind the siding will also keep it from deteriorating over time. That, proper flashings and a bug screen are the way to go. Whether *Hardie, wood or vinyl siding, we share a few examples of different applications. In the case of wood siding we all too often find that the existing siding has not been primed first on the backside even though there have been several coats of paint or stain applied to the front. After a good rainstorm the moisture in the siding gets drawn out by the sun and the cupping starts to occur. Cedar siding can also "bleed" through the stain or paint, so priming the back and also the front, if painted, is highly recommended. If large quantities need to be primed or prestained, and you have the room, spraying is ideal, but messy. For smaller jobs Vandercraft prefers to brush or roll on. Both oil and latex primers are available and depending on the severity of bleed-through they have you covered. Let Vandercraft tackle this job for you so no paint, primer or stain is spilled at your place.

Hello Monday!
THE POOL, next to the breakfast buffet, undoubtedly the favourite part of most Hotels.
This one having been in service for many many years needed some serious attention. Blistering ceiling paint (humidity), a handful of cracked tiles, outdated colours - it needed an up-to-date makeover. Vandercraft sprang into action having been awarded the opportunity to make it happen. Check out these photos showing the seriousness of the situation and how we were able to remedy it. New paint colours were chosen and a plan of action was put into place. After having the pool emptied we set out to erect a safe temporary working platform. Existing drywall was removed and eventually replaced with new. Broken tiles were replaced and a high performance semigloss paint was applied in all drywalled areas to repel any moisture. After completion, the pool was cleaned & resealed professionally as was the surrounding tile. Once again it became the favourite part of this Hotel. Check it out! - The Clarion Hotel is situated in the beautiful Fraser Valley area of Abbotsford. Enjoy your swim!
Whether a pool remodel in a Hotel or an unground pool in your own backyard - Vandercraft can make it happen. Summer is on the way, Call us today.

Good Morning Folks!
Ever wonder why concrete sidewalks, patios and driveways CRACK? Keep reading, you're about to find out.
The biggest culprit is preparation, or lack thereof. If the ground under the concrete has not been compacted well or still has top soil or debris under it the concrete will sink over time or crack in areas. After ground compaction a thin layer of crushed gravel (also compacted) is spread out over the designated area. For sidewalks and patios a thinner 3/8" (10mm) steel rebar is installed in a gridlike pattern. For interior slabs a thicker 5/8" (15mm) rebar is used especially in a shop housing vehicles or machinery. Sometimes a thin steel mesh is used usually over a foam underlayment. This mesh will also be used to secure infloor/slab heating pipes like in a large basement in a home already fitted with infloor radiant heating. You may have seen these rebar preparations on your neighbours driveway or patio or at a commercial building site. Whatever the situation, it is imperative that the proper preparations are executed to ensure a great looking solid product that will stand the test of time.
If you're ready for concrete replacement or repairs on your property contact Vandercraft Construction. They will make these areas as good as new.

Hello All and Happy Wintery Monday Morning!
We continue our sharing of concrete foundation information with the topic of Drainage. HYDROSTATIC Pressure is a technical term often used in foundation preparations. How is this important to me, you ask? Well, if your crawlspace or basement is damp, wet or leaking you might want to continue reading. Aside from a properly poured and vibrated concrete foundation, sealing them is equally important. Today's photos show the procedures in place. Typical only with crawlspaces and basements an asphalt emulsion, (damp proofing) is sprayed onto the exterior then covered up with a dimpled membrane which keeps the ground water away. This diverting of water can only be done if proper drainage is also in place. A combination of rigid and perforated drainpipe, cloth and sumps ensure that water flows freely away from the foundation. No more clay drain tiles (see photo) which clog up easily as roots grow into them or are displaced by settling soil. If these procedures are not followed, Hydrostatic (water) pressure will build up and cause foundations to leak and sometimes crack.
If your crawlspace or basement is wet or leaking let Vandercraft have a look and discuss with you the options to repair. A dry crawlspace or basement is of great value to your home, Don't neglect it. Call us today before it's too late.

Happy Monday Morning!
Another year has begun. Speaking of beginnings - Let's look at Foundations, after all, this is where it starts, Right?
FOUNDATIONS 101: Once excavation has been completed footings are constructed with steel reinforcing bar installed. When renovating, an underpinning procedure sometimes needs to be executed to carry new bearing point loads because of an "Open Concept" transformation above which might include installation of a structural beam or two. Steel rebar is also mounted inside the temporary formwork which sometimes includes the odd basement window as well. A Team effort is called upon to place the concrete which is quite often pumped in from one or more trucks. The concrete starts to cure and the temporary formwork is removed in the days following. The end result is an extremely solid structure able to support the new building on top. Whether LARGE or small, residential foundations are typically constructed in this manner. It's a messy but necessary job which needs to be done to start the building process off right. Check out these photos, maybe you've seen this take place in your neighbourhood?

Our Story

Father-son team Dick and Dwayne Vanderwel are the driving force behind Vandercraft Construction, serving homeowners of the Lower Mainland with top quality construction services.

Dick first set foot on Canadian soil in 1966 as a six year old (you do the math!), after immigrating with his parents and brothers from the Netherlands. After three years spent in Ontario, 1971 saw them setting down roots in the beautiful Fraser Valley. As the son of a pastor, Dick learned his love of craft and woodworking by watching his dad whittle away in his garage. He was driven by that passion for art and construction and ultimately chose to pursue a career that would satisfy both.

In 1986 Dick launched his construction company, then named “Craftwell Construction.” Dwayne was born to Dick and his wife Melody the same year, and joined his dad on the job site soon after. Saturdays would find him following his dad around the job sites, picking up as much advice and as many tools as he was permitted to! In 2007 Dwayne finally joined his dad full-time, and spent five years learning and perfecting the Vanderwel way. Eventually marriage and a move gave Dwayne another five years of project management and construction experience under other employers, before they decided to join forces once again.

In early 2016 Vandercraft Construction came into being, and Dick and Dwayne have greatly enjoyed the benefits of working with family, but also the value of their varied experiences and skills. Together they’ve committed to strong company values and a vision for the future that leaves clients and trades totally satisfied. What they want for themselves is the same as what they want for you: to make your home safe, whole, and well.
