Pictured is a roof we were called to yesterday after the individual experienced water leaking into their home. Upon inspection we determined that the leak was not only caused from ice damming but that it had also caused two rafters in their attic to fracture.
Ice damming is a serious issue that can cause significant damage to your roof and home. When snow melts on your roof and then refreezes at the edge, it can create an ice dam. This dam prevents melted water from draining properly, leading to water backing up under your shingles and into your attic. The weight of the water and ice can damage your roof structure, leading to leaks, mold, and even structural damage.
Here are some suggestions for people who are currently experiencing ice damming:
* Remove snow from the roof: If it's safe to do so, you can try to remove snow from the roof to reduce the weight and prevent further ice damming.
* Use a roof rake: A roof rake can help you safely remove snow from your roof without having to climb up.
* Call a professional: If you're not comfortable removing snow from your roof, or if the ice damming is severe, it's best to call a professional roofer. They can assess the situation and provide the best solution.
* Prevent further damage: Once the ice damming is resolved, you can take steps to prevent it from happening again. This includes ensuring your attic is properly insulated and ventilated.
* Monitor for leaks: Keep an eye out for any leaks in your attic or ceiling. If you see any water damage, contact a professional to assess the situation and repair the damage.
