The rare earth Matamec project is subject to environmental assessments through both the federal and provincial governments. These processes are there to ensure that the strict environmental norms, now put in place for mining projects, are followed. For instance, at the federal level, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) states:

"One of the purposes identified in CEAA, 2012 is to ensure opportunities for meaningful public participation during an EA. The Act requires that the Agency provide the public with an opportunity to participate in the EA and an opportunity to comment on the draft EA report.

The overall objective of meaningful public participation is best achieved when all parties have a clear understanding of the proposed project as early as possible in the review process. The proponent is required to provide current information about the project to the public and especially to the communities likely to be most affected by the project."

Not only is Matamec making social acceptability a priority for the Kipawa rare earth project, but the company is committed to be a socially responsible neighbour in the region and to the people we live with. Since the beginning of its activities, four years ago, Matamec has been dedicated to communicate regularly, in an open and transparent way.

In this regard, Matamec has organized and participated, in 2013 alone, to 9 public meetings throughout the Témiscamingue region to present the project to the population. These events gave opportunities to discuss and hear questions and concerns. It is important to know that as the Kipawa project evolves, it takes into account the concerns and issues of the population.

The mining industry creates jobs and wealth for the regions of Québec. Nearly 900 facilities, about 50,000 workers and many communities count on it for their development.

The commodities extracted from Québec's bedrock, including gold, iron, niobium, copper, titanium, salt, chrysotile, graphite, dimension stone and construction materials, contribute to Québec's economic growth. There are approximately 200 active mines, quarries and sandpits throughout the territory.
