Mrinank Sharma, the head of Anthropic's Safeguards Research Team, resigned yesterday. Oxford DPhil, Cambridge Master's, the person literally responsible for making Claude safe.

In his resignation letter, he wrote: "I've repeatedly seen how hard it is to truly let our values govern our actions. I've seen this within myself, within the organization, where we constantly face pressures to set aside what matters most."

His final project at Anthropic? Studying how AI assistants might "distort our humanity" or make users "less human."

He's not going to another AI company. He's pursuing a poetry degree and what he calls "courageous speech."

This matters not because one person left a company, but because of who he was and what he was working on. When the person in charge of keeping AI safe says the organization struggles to live its own values, that's not drama. That's information.

Two other senior researchers also left Anthropic in the same week. The company has not commented.

The question isn't whether AI is dangerous. It's whether the people building it can be honest about what's happening while they're building it.

Anthropic released a legal plugin for Claude. It comes with a clear disclaimer: all outputs should be reviewed by licensed attorneys. It's an assistant, not a replacement.

The stock market still panicked. Employees are saying they feel like they're "coming to work every day to put myself out of a job."

Here's the thing though, the tool hasn't replaced anyone. It hasn't even proven it can. The article itself admits AI agents "have yet to prove themselves in the real world."

The employees' fear is real, and it deserves empathy. Feeling like you might be building yourself out of existence is genuinely unsettling. But a market selloff driven by the idea of disruption, not actual disruption? That's fear of the light.

We need more understanding of what these tools actually are (assistants, not replacements), and less panic about what they might theoretically become.

The gap between fear and reality is where the real damage happens.
