Before freezing temperatures arrive, there's one important plumbing task you shouldn't forget: turning off the water supply to your outdoor faucets!
⠀
Water left in outdoor plumbing can freeze and expand, potentially causing pipes to crack or burst.
⠀
A few simple steps can help protect your home:
• Disconnect and drain garden hoses
• Turn off the indoor shutoff valve for outdoor faucets, if your home has one
• Open the outdoor faucet to drain remaining water
• If your indoor shutoff has a small drain valve (bleeder valve), carefully open it to release trapped water, then close it
• Follow the winterizing instructions for your specific faucet
⠀
Taking a few minutes now can help prevent costly plumbing problems when temperatures drop.
