What is beneath the boards?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: What is holding up your deck?
The finished boards and railings get most of the attention, but a deck’s long-term performance begins underneath.
Foundations, beams, joists, blocking, connections and proper spacing all contribute to the strength and stability of the finished structure.
This is also why replacing old boards is not always as simple as installing new material over the existing frame. The structure must be suitable for the decking selected.
A good deck should look right above the surface—and be built properly below it.

Wood, composite or PVC?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: Wood, composite or PVC?
Pressure-treated wood generally has the lowest initial cost, but it requires ongoing maintenance.
Composite decking offers lower maintenance, many colours and a range of price points.
PVC decking provides excellent moisture resistance and long-term outdoor performance, usually at a higher initial cost.
There is no single material that is right for every homeowner. The best choice depends on your budget, preferred appearance and maintenance expectations.

Resurface or rebuild?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: Can an older deck be resurfaced?
Sometimes—but new deck boards should not be installed over a structure simply because it is still standing.
Before recommending resurfacing, we look at the framing, joist spacing, connections, stairs and foundations. Some structures can be reused or repaired. Others should be rebuilt before new decking is installed.
Why does this matter? Low-maintenance deck boards may last for decades, but they still depend on the structure beneath them.

Most people picture the finished deck.

The colour.
The railing.
The furniture.
The BBQ.
The first sunny evening when it finally feels like summer.

But a great deck starts before any of that.
It starts with the structure.
The framing.
The layout.
The support.
The way the deck connects to the home.
The details that homeowners may not see once the boards go on but will rely on every time they step outside.

That is something we think about a lot at HDD Red Deer.

A deck should look beautiful when it is finished.

But it should also feel solid, function properly, and be built with the long term in mind.
Because the parts you do not always see are often the parts that matter most.
