The Story Behind the PEI Humane Society 🐾

Did you know that the Prince Edward Island Humane Society is 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐄𝐈? 😱

Each year, the organization cares for nearly 𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀, providing shelter, veterinary care, rehabilitation, and adoption services to animals in need.

📆 In 2024, the PEI Humane Society proudly celebrated its 𝟱𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 — a remarkable milestone that reflects five decades of compassion, dedication, and second chances. 😍

As a community-based organization, the PEI Humane Society relies on public donations to:

In 2026, the PEI Humane Society will move into a brand-new 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲® animal shelter, designed to reduce stress and improve the wellbeing of every animal in their care.

This purpose-built facility will include:

📏 Expanded space for animal care
👏 Dedicated areas for community programs
📁 Administrative offices
🏥 Their first-ever in-house surgical suite

This new shelter represents a 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲 across Prince Edward Island.

❄️ This past winter, a cat was brought to the PEI Humane Society with severe injuries to his paws.

At first, it was believed that his wounds were caused by frostbite after he was found hiding under a deck. But after a thorough examination by the shelter’s veterinary team, the true cause became clear.

🥺 𝐅𝐚𝐮𝐱 𝐏𝐚𝐰’s injuries were actually burns caused by prolonged exposure to extreme heat — a heartbreaking reminder of the neglect some animals endure.

The shelter immediately stepped in to provide the medical care and compassion he so desperately needed.

When no owner came forward, 𝐅𝐚𝐮𝐱 𝐏𝐚𝐰 entered the adoption program.
With time, treatment, and a lot of love, he made a remarkable recovery.

💚 Today, 𝐅𝐚𝐮𝐱 𝐏𝐚𝐰 is thriving in a loving home.

3 choses que les professionnels en refuge devraient savoir sur les infections respiratoires félines

Nos collaborateurs chez Haven Veterinary Services, la Dre Emilia Wong Gordon et le Dr Wesley Cheung (DABVP, médecine vétérinaire en refuges), signent un article complet sur les infections des voies respiratoires supérieures (IVRS) chez le chat en contexte de refuge.

Voici les points à retenir :

1. Les IVRS félines contractées en refuge sont évitables. Les outils les plus efficaces : réduire la durée de séjour, diminuer le stress et offrir un hébergement conforme aux normes reconnues.

2. Les tests diagnostiques ont leurs limites et sont généralement recommandés seulement en situation d'éclosion. Les résultats doivent toujours être interprétés à la lumière des signes cliniques et des tendances observées dans l'établissement.

3. En situation d'éclosion ou endémique, le traitement seul ne réglera pas le problème. Cerner les causes profondes est la seule façon fiable d'arrêter une éclosion et d'éviter qu'elle revienne.

🫣 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲 was surrendered to the 𝐏𝐄𝐈 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 after a serious accident.

While trying to jump over a wrought iron fence, she became stuck and suffered a significant wound to her abdomen.

🏨 At the emergency clinic, it was determined that 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲 would require extensive care, including weekly follow-up visits and close monitoring to ensure her wound healed properly.

Although 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲's owners loved her deeply, they knew they were unable to provide the level of care she needed.

👏 Thanks to the strong relationship between the veterinary team and the local Humane Society, 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲 was surrendered that same day.

The shelter’s veterinarian took over her care, monitoring her progress and ensuring she received everything she needed to recover.

Once 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲 was stable, she was placed in foster care, where she continued to improve.

When she was finally ready, 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲 entered the adoption program and found a loving new home.
