🚧 Not your everyday excavation job! 🚧
A little something different for us at Carew Contracting Ltd.!
We received a call from a homeowner who had been dealing with a mysterious sinkhole developing in their backyard over the past few years. By the time we arrived, the lawn had sunk roughly 18 inches over an area about 10 feet wide!
First, we had to temporarily remove a section of fence to get our excavator into the backyard. Once we had access, we started digging to see if we could get to the bottom of what was going on. 🔍
As we opened up the hole, we discovered a significant amount of groundwater flowing along a natural shelf of shale bedrock. From what we could see, the moving water had been slowly washing away the soil beneath the lawn, eventually causing the ground above to settle and sink.
With a better understanding of what was happening underground, we opened up the affected area and had 10 tonnes of clear drainage stone slung into the excavation. This was followed by a layer of geotextile fabric before backfilling, grading, and finishing everything off with fresh topsoil.
The idea was to provide a free-draining area for the groundwater to move through while helping prevent further soil erosion.
💪 Not every job is as straightforward as digging a hole and filling it back in! Sometimes you've got to do a little investigating to figure out what's happening beneath the surface.
