There’s something special about looking back on this Birch Island porch build. A tricky site, solid bedrock, and a tight footprint could’ve limited the design, but timber framing lets you lean into challenges rather than fight them. From scribing live-edge ash collar ties (saved from becoming firewood) to fitting the dragon beam and compound joinery, every part of this build came together with intention. Projects like this remind us why we love what we do: turning unique landscapes into timeless structures that truly belong where they stand.

These winter photos are a great reminder of how well this project continues to hold up inside and out.

We took an outdated porch and reimagined it into two timber frame porches, complete with a live-edge Ash tie beam that instantly became the standout feature. The lake-facing deck was extended, the exterior was finished with cedar siding, and a steel roof was added to handle every season on Manitoulin.

Inside, the living room renovation brought new life to the space, with existing beams wrapped in clear pine that matched the homeowners’ style perfectly.
