When a hydraulic cylinder failure threatened to delay a vessel's operations, our team was ready to answer the call.

We received a request from the crew of the Federal Kivalina while the vessel was en route from Ohio. The crew had been attempting to remove seized cylinder pins throughout the voyage but had been unsuccessful. Before the ship even arrived in Thunder Bay, our General Manager, Kevin, coordinated a plan and dispatched two team members to meet the vessel at port.

Once onboard, it became clear the cylinder was completely seized and would need to be removed for repair. That presented another challenge: getting the cylinder off the ship.

Working closely with the vessel's crew and engineering team in Hamilton, we coordinated a solution with Thunder Bay Tug Services. Using a tug boat, the cylinder was safely transferred from the vessel and transported to Keefer Terminal, where our mechanic met the shipment and brought it back to our shop for assessment and repair.

The teamwork didn't stop there. After identifying usable spare components that were already onboard the vessel, our team worked into the evening to prepare the necessary parts and coordinate their return to the ship. The parts were delivered via tug boat back to the vessel, where the crew successfully reassembled and installed the cylinder.

From the initial call to the final installation, this project required planning, communication, and collaboration between multiple teams, both onshore and offshore. It's a great example of the dedication and problem-solving mindset our team brings to every challenge.
Thank you to everyone involved for helping get the Federal Kivalina back up and running safely and efficiently.

πŸŽ‰ Happy 1-Year Workiversary, Jouni! πŸŽ‰

Today we're celebrating Jouni and his first year with Thunder Bay Hydraulics!

Jouni joined our team as a Welding Apprentice after being highly recommended by one of our valued community partners, and he has proven to be a fantastic addition to our car lift manufacturing team. Throughout his first year, Jouni has embraced every opportunity to expand his knowledge, take on new challenges, and continue building his skills as a welder.

When he's not in the shop, Jouni stays busy on the ice, the ball diamond, and the golf course. Whether it's hockey, softball, or golf, his team-first attitude and dedication carry through both at work and in his personal life.

We're grateful to have Jouni as part of the team and look forward to supporting his continued growth as he progresses in his welding apprenticeship.

πŸŽ‰ Happy 1-Year Workiversary, Molly! πŸŽ‰

This week we're celebrating one year of having Molly Forneri as part of the Thunder Bay Hydraulics team!

Molly first joined us as a co-op student and quickly demonstrated a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and passion for the skilled trades. Since then, she has continued to grow in her role as a Welding Apprentice as part of the car lift manufacturing team, taking on new challenges and developing her skills every day.

Beyond her work in the shop, Molly is also a fantastic ambassador for the trades. She participates in community events, helping showcase opportunities for women in skilled trades and inspiring the next generation to consider rewarding careers in manufacturing and welding.

We're proud to be a part of Molly's journey from co-op student to valued team member and look forward to seeing all she accomplishes in the years ahead.

Congratulations on your first year, Molly, and thank you for everything you bring to the team!

Building the Future of Skilled Trades, Together

Last week, we were proud to have two members of the Thunder Bay Hydraulics team, Maddie, Foreman, and Molly, Apprentice Welder, attend the Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship Pathways Professional Learning Event at the Industry Social House.

The event brought together educators and industry professionals to create meaningful conversations about careers in the skilled trades. By sharing their experiences, insights, and career journeys, Maddie and Molly helped provide local educators with valuable real-world perspectives they can bring back to their classrooms and share with students across our community.

What makes their stories especially meaningful is that both Maddie and Molly began their journeys through co-op placements right here at Thunder Bay Hydraulics.

We believe strong communities are built when businesses, educators, and students work together. Events like this help strengthen those connections, inspire the next generation of tradespeople, and showcase the rewarding careers available right here in Northern Ontario.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this event possible and for continuing to invest in the future of skilled trades in our region.
